Really? This is what I paid for?
Let's start off with the pros of this place: helpful, friendly front desk staff; internet access available (2 PCs - however, no printer); free continental breakfast every morning (pastries, donuts, fresh fruit, coffee & tea) and wine and cheese in the evening; 2 blocks from Union Square. The cons (warning: longer list; reserve at your own risk)...so my husband and I summed it up to this - the hotel wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. It was kind of...well, mediocre. The decor is old, victorian and drab. The least the hotel can do is get new carpet. The carpet in our room, which was probably vacuumed, had several stains on it, so we feared walking on it barefoot. The rooms are small, so plan on it as a place to sleep, get changed and shower. Going back to the decor, I thought I could appreciate a vintage style hotel, but I was wrong, it's like staying at your grandparents house with cherry wood furniture from the 80s and heavily floraled bedding. Surprisingly the beds were comfortable (but creaky). We had an inside room (4th to the left of the elevator). There is no AC unit in each room, so we had to open the window if it got hot. Problem: every morning we woke up to the sounds of the pigeons that hung out on the window sills of those rooms and the flapping as they flew away. EVERY MORNING. Even with the window closed we could hear it. If you looked out the window you could see that this was the hotspot for the birds, excessive amounts of bird poop were on all of the sills. It's disgusting. It got chilly a couple of days and the radiator kicked on, it made a terrible noise like someone clanging something against the pipe. We were able to turn that off. I probably wouldn't recommend staying there if you can. Locationwise it wasn't terrible, but most of the things we did was north of there. It's sad that that is what $114 gets you in San Fran -- I don't know how people afford to live there, but maybe the scheme is squeezing tourists dry? We were able to still have fun though despite the hotel circumstances.
