Mercure Hotel Severinshof Koeln City, Cologne

We spent 3 weeks in Europe and after much discussion have decided Hotel Mercure was the winner as far as places we stayed (and we stayed in some nice places!). If you have a decent pair of legs, the Dom is within walking distance. The room was ok size, and very clean. Problem: It's hard to get out in the a.m. because of that breakfast! IT'S AWESOME! Made to order omelettes, plus all the breads, fruit, cheese and, AND, a chocolate fountain. Oh, it's glorious! So get there early! Interestingly, it's located across the street and one block from the archive building that just tragically collapsed. There is a lot of construction going on, but our room on the far side was pretty quiet, even though highway ran below.

The hotel rooms were more than adequate. However, when I booked through expedia, my reservation said I would get two double beds, instead I only got two single beds. It wasn't a huge problem, but as I was sharing with another person, not my partner, I would have rather had more space away. As it was, the single beds were very close, so that they could turn into a double. However, the hotel was a great value, right next door to a metro stop, and a short walk from central Cologne. I thought 15 euros was a bit too much for breakfast and instead would get a coffee and croissant from a local cafe located quite close to the hotel every day. I was there about a week. All in all I was happy with the location and the value of the hotel. I did have a friend who couldn't stay here because he's in a wheelchair and the hotel is not accessible for people with mobile disabilities. This should be changed, or at least a few rooms should be made to have access for disabled travelers.

Very nice hotel, breakfast fantastic. I would certainly go there again. Rooms clean and staff very helpful. Prices good as well. The underground is next door.
