Cairns Sunshine Tower Hotel, Cairns

This hotel was not my top choice, but we stayed in Cairns on a Friday and Saturday night, and many of the hotels I chose were fully booked already. We had a reservation for a Queen room, but when we checked in late Friday night, we got to our room and it had not been cleaned or serviced since the last guests. When we got back to reception we were told that there were no other Queen rooms left, so we took a Triple (twins) room with no offer of a lower rate or any other compensation from Reception. It was close to midnight and I was too tired to complain or argue. The room we ended up with had old furnishings, but the room was clean overall. There was a little bit of mold in the bathroom, but this is common in a tropical area. The room faced the pool area so it was quiet, although the other side of the hotel faces a busy highway, and I would expect that street noise would be quite loud. This hotel is about 1 km from the core city area, so it took us a good 15-minute walk to dinner. No good restaurants were in the immediate vicinity, although we ate the buffet breakfast at the hotel restaurant and it was worthwhile. The hotel is also 4 blocks from the ocean, so unless you are on one of the very top floors, you will not have an ocean view, so do not count on that as a major draw to the hotel. If I were in Cairns again, I would not stay here again. There are hotels that were closer to the city center, and were the same price or lower, but were sold out for the dates I was there.
