Spectacular and affordable
I almost hate giving Ragged Point Inn a good review because I want to keep the place all to myself.
The setting is absolutely spectacular. Perched high upon rugged cliffs along HWY 1, about 80 miles south of Big Sur and 15 miles north of Hearst Castle, one can overlook the vast beauty of the Pacific Ocean at its most unspoiled. The fog-shrouded mountains of San Simeon seem intimate, almost demure here. The natural beauty and the fact that Ragged Point is located far from the dense motel-rows of nearby Central Coast towns, gives this setting an especial aura of timelessness. It seems that the hand of god was particularly inspired when it set out to form this place. At dusk, the setting sun relinquishes its light to the ocean and the whole place becomes awash with brilliant color. On clear nights, the sky is glorious with stars.
Needless to say, it is a perfect setting for the many weddings that take place here. One wonders if getting married in such a timeless place makes for more committed. long-lasting marriages.
The rooms are spacious and very clean. The owner is conscientious enough to provide tea as well as coffee in the baskets left in each room.
Some rooms have fireplaces, but only those with one bed in the room. Like most motels, there is an assumption that only couples desire rooms with spectacular views and fireplaces. It would be nice if traveling companions could also avail themselves of some of the more desirable "romantic" amenities that are in the one-bed suites.
The glass-roofed restaurant serves delicious, well-prepared food at very reasonable prices. For breakfast, sit on the patio where you can view the fog-fingered mountains behind you as well as the green and lovely grounds around you. For dinner, if the weather isn't too chilly to sit outside, the frogs will serenade you while you watch the sunset create awe-inspiring silhouettes of the pines and cypresses all around.
For me, this is the best place on the Central Coast because people of ordinary means can enjoy the spectacular beauty, fine food, and lovely accommodations that are usually available only to the wealthy.
