Hilarious!
By Paul, 8/23/10
We reads Brian's review before we were aware that Brian was the manager of the place. Buoyed up by that review, we made a reservation. Our reservation was cancelled by "one of the employees" (i.e. Brian). We showed up, and Brian did come up with a room (over the living quarters for he and his family). We took it, but ended up with a key to the (forbidden) storage room. We woke poor Brian up, and it was all straightened out. He didn't even want to partake in any of the complimentary cheese and crackers that we were preparing in the bathroom. I did kind of like the ephemeral curry scent.

never again
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/24/08
My wife and I stayed here in June and I really wish we had carefully reviewed places to stay in Bennington. Room was musty-smelling, double beds old, short, and saggy. The owners do not do a very good job of cleaning the rooms. Our bed sheets had rust stains on them and I found the mattress uncomfortable to sleep in. I don't even want to mention how dirty the bathroom tile and area around the shower looked - horrid! Air conditioner so old and loud we couldn't possibly have slept with it on. We would have been better off spending the night in our car!

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE..STAY ELSEWHERE
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/16/07
Where do I start? First off, the reviews that are on the website were made during different ownership. We stayed there 12, 13 and 14 January 2007. The only good thing about the room was that it was clean. Now for the things that were wrong: - The toilet would not flush correctly, normally requiring three flushes. - Despite advertising HBO.....it didn't work. - There was no phone service. - The alarm clock, a hot $6.00 item was broken and would not keep time. The major problem, however, was the heat. Upon arrival, for which I had a reservation, the room temperature was below 60 degrees (that is as low as the thermostat registers but it was closer to 40 degrees). Whenever the room was enpty due to our sightseeing or shopping the thermostat was turned off by the present owner. As if that is not bad enough, on Sunday we went out to breakfast at about 10:00am. Our plan was to return to the room and relax since most of Bennington is closed on Sundays. Upon our arrival at the room we realized that the heat was off once again. The outside temperature was 35 degrees. When I went to the office it was closed. An individual who identified himself as the "manager" informed me that the owner had turned off the heat to the room at the breaker, locked the breaker box and went out. He said he had a cell phone number to contact the owner but the owner's cell phone was not working. Well, there went the relaxing afternoon we had planned. Instead we were forced to leave the room for the comfort of heat in our vehicle. IN SUMMARY, STAY ANYWHERE EXPECT THIS PLACE.

not a luxury establishment
By John, 2/2/06
Actually, the name "Fife N Drum" is accurate in describing the decor and amenities, which last were updated during the days when George Washington was preparing to cross the Delaware. The motel reminds me of places I stayed as a kid in the late 60's and early 70's--small room, somewhat musty and not terribly clean, and worst of all what was advertised as in-room coffee was an ancient Sanka machine! I had to go into town in the morning to a convenience store for the real item. The owners were fairly pleasant, though. The view was nice, and the pool was pretty decent. If you get quoted a good rate and just want a room for the night (as we did), the place isn't awful. But if you had a longer stay planned, you might want to look elsewhere. I'm not picky or fussy about hotels, but there's no way this place warrants a five-star rating. However, from my observation, many of the other motels we drove passed also look to be of about the same vintage as the Fife N' Drum.

By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/22/05
Found in the AAA Book, and remembered staying her 20+ years ago with my parents. Better than ever. Wonderfully kept up and very very clean. Located just out of town in a quiet setting with wonderful view of the Green Mts. Great grounds, very clean pool and even cleaner rooms. Hosts are very very helpful A real treasure. A wonderful place to just relax and enjoy

What a wonderful surprise
By Ed, 6/22/05
Downtown Bennington seemed too congested and noisy, so we drove just 1 1/2 miles south to find the Fife'n Drum Motel. It was one of the nicest and definitely the cleanest of our entire trip. Wonderful relaxing grounds, a picnic area, a wonderful extremely clean pool, very very clean and comfortable rooms. We loved it, and deifintely will return. Well worth the very affordable rate. It even had free wireless internet, which we hadn't had for three nights. We ended up staying 2 extra days.
