We had the worst experience at this hotel - I got food poisoning there - beware

My wife and I booked a two-night stay at the Manila Peninsula in early January 2008. We originally had a reservation at the newer and more luxurious Shangri-la, but decided instead to stay at the Manila Pen because my wife's cousin got us a cheaper corporate rate there. Worst mistake we ever made. I got violently ill there from food poisoning, and instead of being treated well by the hotel, many of the staff members there were so arrogant and deceitful. We were treated so badly, and expected much, much better from a purportedly upscale hotel like the Manila Pen.
During my stay at the Manila Pen, my wife and I ate most of our meals there. A few hours after eating a lunch at the hotel, I started to feel sick with stomach cramps, that worsened as the day went on. We had to miss our flight out of the Philippines that night.
During our stay, the hotel's on-call medical staff acted deceitful toward us. They kept insisting that I didn't get sick from the food at the hotel. They said it could not be a bacterial infection, and it was just viral or a reaction to the spicy food. I have been eating spicy food all my life and never had a reaction like this. Anyway, after I spent all night in pain with chills, stomach cramps, and running to the toilet every five minutes with liquid, bloody stool the entire night, they finally decided to give me antibiotics the next morning "just in case". Of course, after I took the antibiotics (which are given for bacterial infections, not viral), I felt much better and started to improve considerably. My wife asked the hotel's nurse why they would give me antibiotics if it was not a bacterial infection, and the nurse said it was just a "prophylaxis" treatment, meaning they gave antibiotics just to prevent or protect against a future bacterial infection. Of course, everyone knows that antibiotics are never given as a prophylaxis; rather they are used to treat and cure an existing bacterial infection.
Worse yet, the front desk manager at the hotel was very rude and arrogant. Managers at first-class hotels should not have foul attitudes and treat their guests that way. He kept arguing with my wife, and did not believe I was sick at all. Only when he came up to our hotel room did he realize I was really sick and in severe pain. Still, he did not believe I got sick from hotel food, saying "it had been so long since someone had food poisoning at the hotel". Because of my bacterial infection, we had to miss our flight and pay over $600 to change our flights last minute. He had the doctor and nurse do a blood and stool test on me. He said that it would take about a week to get full lab results, but that if they came back positive, he would reimburse us for our flight change fees, as this would be "Peninsula standard" procedure. Of course, when we got back to America, the hotel sent us the lab results, which came back positive and indicated a heavy level of E. coli (gross!) and no viral infection. I asked the manager to reimburse me, and he refused to do so. Instead, he referred me to the lawyer for the hotel.
Our personal opinion is that Manila, sadly, is still not a place to spend a vacation. It has a lot of potential, but it is not safe and the people in general can be quite untrustworthy. The Manila Pen, in particular, has horrible service and the management are arrogant and not guest-friendly.
The Shangri-la and Sofitel are excellent alternatives.
