The Grand Hotel, Taipei City

What can I say about this place? The Grand Hotel exceeds in some departments while completely failing in others. Below is a list of the good and bad for you to make a decision Pros: *Bell Hops were so polite and offered excellent service *Receptionists were helpful and spoke flawless English *Close to night market and lively part of town with shuttle *Majestic garden and lobby Pros: *Found hair on the nightstand that def wasnt mine *Didnt vacuum the room well and there was debris on the floor *Hotel appears to have a low budget, many maintenance things not fixed (ie light blubs) *I have to pay for internet by the day *Movies on Demand consist mostly of Porn with some regular movies thrown in as an after thought (incase you have kids) Its alright at best but I wont be returning

We stayed at the Grand Hotel for one week. What a wonderful way to experience Taiwan. Everything about this hotel was just perfect. The decor of the lobby with its majestic grand staircase and many lanterns and a gigantic floral arrangement in a Chinese vase on a table in the middle of the lobby sets the tone for the Taiwan experience. Everyone is competent and polite. I nicknamed the Room Service man "Flash" because no sooner did I hang the phone...he was knocking on the door with my order. There was a shuttle bus that took us to the train, so it was convenient to get to and from places. We used it to go to Taipei 101 and the various night markets and a Buddist Temple. I would HIGHLY recommend anyone to stay at the Grand Hotel. The rooms were clean and the shower was wonderful. Great water pressure...I looked forward to my shower after a day of going around sight seeing. Very relaxing. The pool was huge!! All in all I would give this Hotel a 10 ++++++

I stayed in a prestige room in the 7th floor in June, 2008. The room was huge and with a large balcony and view across the city. I cannot fault the hotel except for its remoteness. There are no 7-11's within walking distance, no paper shops or stores to browse etc. The hotel itself is a reminder of how hotels were like Raffles in the early days. Beautifully turned out staff, very attentive and with good English. The biggest problem I had was the loneliness I felt. The size of the place offered nothing intimate. For a family taking a taxi out each day, it's great. I was there in Taiwan for business, but I had 2 free days before business started. It rained incessantly, and there was simply nothing to do except surf the internet at $15 a minute! I stayed at the Caesar Park after my business in downtown Taipei, a very nice hotel, not so grand of course, but in the heart of the action. I'll stay there next time. Grand Hotel was a nice experience though, it's a very photogenic property!

Seeing this hotel from a distance is amazing, it's a beautiful building which I can describe as being very oriental looking. When approaching it looks even nicer, when you get their the doorman will open the door for you and you're met with an amazing lobby. The lobby is in typical oriental fashion, red carpets, and red pillars holding up a gold lined roof. Theres even some statues and other items which fit in well with the oriental look and feel. The staff are very pleasant and all that I met speak English to a very good standard. The room was fairly small but I wasn't in it much. The bathroom was nice, a lovely bath with one of those electric toilets with the heated seat and built in beday. The breakfast in the morning was good, it was a buffet breakfast with a mixture of Asian and Western dishes. All in all its a good hotel, a little pricey in my opinion but its still a nice place to stay. It's worth going to for the lobby alone.

Seeing all the negative reviews, I had to write something. We stayed at this hotel twice. We somehow managed to have a room on the main building , 4th floor, right above the main entrance both times. My brother and sister preferred to have hotel in the east part of the city. Those hotels are typically newer and more centrally located than the Grant. As long as you did not get one of those rooms that are inside (with no windows), or in the ancillaries wing, you will not be disappointed. Granted, if you were not looking forward to the Bellagio. By the way, a little hint, Bellagio can be easily found in Vegas. The Grant is one of the few, if not the only, hotel in Taipei that we can sleep with the Windows opened. Taiwan was too humid for us that were accustomed to the SF Bay Area. Anyway, the hotel is not the newest, the staff was not the most accommodating, but the rooms were nicely sized, location fairly decent (close the light rail). The building itself, though, is one of a kind. You won't find that in Tokyo, New York, or Beijin.

I was booked into the hotel recently and my first impression was wow, and I get to spend two nights here. The room was huge,bed was nice and comfortable,I slept well and the bathroom was clean and spotless with thick towels. I could not wait to go out on the the huge balcony and take photos. At breakfast in the dining room, I settled on cornflakes and two fried eggs on toast. I like poached eggs for breakfast but the chefs had trouble understanding my request. However as they say when in Rome or in this case in Taipei just go with the flow and get over it. I would recommened the hotel to any visitors to Taipei. Better than any 4 star hotel here in Australia.

DON'T BELIEVE THE POSITIVE REVIEWS. Seeing that there were more positive reviews. I decided to book a room at the Grand Hotel. When I got there the outside structure was quite grand. The lobby of the hotel was very impressive. Thinking that the outside and inside looking nice. I thought my room was going to be a treat. Boy was I wrong! I booked a deluxe room with a view of the city. My room was old, dark and ugly. It was dirty and smelly. The view from the balcony was hideous. The bathroom was really dirty, there were hair in my towels, and everything, blanket, pillow, sheets, bed, stanked of mildew and pee. My sheets had brown stains on them. The paint on the wall was peeling, things were falling apart, even the sockets were coming off the wall. The slippers they provided were reusable ones. They say it has been sanitized but it was greasey and dirty. I had black stains on my feet from wearing it. They claim to be a four star hotel and they can't even provide disposable slippers. At a closer inspection of the building, its really old and the paint is chipping and peeling. The hotel needs major remodeling. The hotel does not live up to its name. Its overpriced for what you get. Also the location of the hotel was far from places. There wasn't any transportation nearby. You have to go through the highway to get to it and to get out. It was really inconvenient to get to places. PEOPLE BELIEVE THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS! Don't be fooled by the outside.

The staff was more concerned about towel theft pool side than providing first class service. Very people in markets and streets were much nicer than in the hotel.

Very neat and clean. Giant RED pillars hold up the first floor. Large RED Chinese lanterns hang from the ceiling. The clerks at the front counter were extremely helpful. The food and gift items are way over priced, but all is done in very good taste. I paid $10 USA for a cup of coffee. The workout room is very clean and has a good variety of excercise machines. The view of the city is excellent. Matresses are firm,the rooms are roomy, but the balcony was HUGE! Take a tour of the city. If you can, take culture tour that includes a foot massage. The temples are amazing with hand crafted and intricate details. And, your feet will never feel better after the acupressure style foot massage! WOW!

We already had a room booking and nowhere else to go in the middle of the night so we had to take what they gave us. The room did not even have a window!!!!!!! Felt like a prison cell. We could not wait for morning to arrive so we could find some other place with AT LEAST A WINDOW and get out of here !!! Decor is creepy, all reed and very old... We asked for a couple of extra towels, it was with great reluctance that we got that simple request fulfilled.
