I love Shanghai!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/27/06
While the hotel is very old, it is clean, charming, and has a great location. If you prefer modern amenities, this may not be to your liking. The architecture is beautiful, and ythe location is at the intersection of Nanjing Road (Walk 5 or 6 block to Pearl City)and the Bund. Absolutely gorgeous view, particularly fromt he rooftop. Make sure to walk the bund in the early morning. Pretty good american style buffet breakfast with beautiful views.

Too hot
By William, 6/27/06
I loved the Peace Hotel and its feeling of a bygone era. With the Jazz band for entertainment and excellent resturants upstairs. My complaints are 2 1. The thermostats do not work my room was always too hot. 2. The staff should be more discreet in asking questions I was given the third degree when I got on the elvator with my assistant eventhough we were not even going to the same floor. Also front desk can be rude.

Would pay more for a newer hotel
By Kurt, 6/26/06
Location on the Bund is excellent. A little lower scale than what most western travelers are looking for in terms modern facilities. Price reflects the difference though.

Great
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/7/05
Great location. Friendly efficient staff.Great character and history.Large well furnished non-formula room. Decent price. Good breakfast.Decent dinner in the evenings overlooking the Bund and Pudong.Just a little noisy as the ships sound their horns occasionally and the traffic outside. Being an old building it hasn't got hermetically sealed triple glazed windows ! A small price to pay for a historic unforgettable stay.

5 Star?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/1/05
This hotel is definitely not a five star hotel! The property is poorly maintained and the staff is indifferent. The steak house was very good, but it didn't make up for the lack of housekeeping, which consisted of making the bed and changing two bath towels or the room amenities, which are far below standard. The Jazz band was okay, but more closely related to American Standards rather than Jazz. At USD $250 per night, I feel completely ripped off!

Ideal Location
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/17/04
The best thing about the Peace Hotel is the location. It is across the street from the Bund (the riverfront area) and on Nanjing Road (the pedestrian shopping street) in Shanghai. The best thick crust pizza in Shanghai (Gino's cafe) is on the same block. Ideal location. We stayed in the South Tower (the 4 star un-renovated portion in November 2004.) It seemed to have retained more of the original glamor the hotel was famous for in its day. Our standard room was better than expected. The pictures I had seen on the internet showed a room with twin beds and the worst kind of art deco character. While the twin bed thing turned out to be true (despite that we were told we'd have a king bed, all standard rooms seem to have twin beds), the decor of the room was great. The high ceilings and tapestry curtains added the grand character I had hoped for. It was very comfortable and clean and I can have no complaints about the room. We had breakfast once in the South Tower. It was horrible. Do not try it. Everything was dipped in oil. It was like they thought "Hey, American's like McDonalds. Let's apply McDonald's cooking methods to everything." Have coffee and pizza at Gino's instead. This does not detract from the rating I give this hotel. There are lots of good places to eat in Shanghai. For Shanghai, the price I paid at the South Tower was very good. I certainly had no need to upgrade to the North Tower. I'd recommend this hotel to everyone.

Wonderful classic hotel Oct. 04
By GARY, 10/10/04
We had a great time staying at the classic 1929 art deco Peace Hotel. As has been reviewed, having a drink up on the roof garden while the lites of the city come up is fantastic! Overlooks the new Pudong area and river. Staff was attentive. Our room was on the 6th floor, clean, charming. Best location along the Bund and Nanjing shopping street.
For the vacation traveler this is perfect. A romantic, historic place in Shanghai. If you are the type person who likes the comfort of "cookie-cutter same hotel room everywhere" style hotel, you may want to look elsewhere. We loved it!

Great Place - Yea, Standard Service, so what?
By Sidney, 9/16/04
A evening pint on the roof overlooking the explosion of Asian capitalism, and then listening to the old Jazz band at night, followed by breakfast viewing boat traffic on the Huang Pu - what more can you ask for? Yes, the service is so-so - what do you expect? This is the new China, and, like New York, if you're here looking for great customer service, you're in the wrong place. Anyway, you find the same thing in Kunming, Xian, or Hong Kong, so what the heck. Ahh, but the view, the history, the aura! Step out the door, and you're on the bund. Why stay where you need a taxi to get there - just stay there! One of my all-time favorite hotels. Don't miss it.

Jazz Bar, Bookstore and view over the Huang Pu river when eating breakfast are the best this hotel can offer to you. Old rooms are shabby and small, long corridors are like ones in the movie Shining...

Do NOT stay here!
By Lisa, 8/29/04
This was NOT a 5 star hotel by any standards. Though we booked a "deluxe" room in the "new" section of the hotel, we were given an old, shabby room in the old section. After talking with the rude, deceitful front desk people again, we were given a room on the 7th floor where the rooms have been renovated. We have traveled extensively throughout the world and being generous, would barely rate this a 3 star hotel. The air-conditioning is sluggish and there is a stale, old smell throughout the hotel. There are many properly rated hotels available to stay at that are conveniently located. Do yourself a BIG favor and do NOT stay at the Peace Hotel.
