Best Western Las Espuelas, Liberia

My class and I went down to Costa Rica for ten days and stayed at Las Espuelas. It was great--a lot better than anything I expected.

It is close to downtown and I walked there, but there is not much of a shoulder along the very busy road. A cab would cost you only about $4.00 to downtown. Most of the rooms are set back from the road so the road noise was blocked out. Free internet in the lobby on one computer but the connection was a little slow at times. Very adequate breakfast with fresh fruit and juice, scrambled eggs, plantains in the AM. Pool was nice, but the hot tub was not hot. Rooms are not luxury, but are comfortable enough and a good value for the money especially since breakfast was included. Several people checked in and told the front desk they were flying out the next day and they wanted to stay close by to get to the airport the next AM. Probably 15-20 minutes by cab to the airport. I'd clearly stay here again if staying at Liberia. Laundry service was quick. Several Tico business men were usually talking in the lobby or bar area discussing some buisness.

After spending the day at the beach, instead of looking for a place to stay where it will cost you much more, drive back to Liberia, and turn Right on the Pan American Highway, just for a couple of kilometers south. Beautiful grounds, very well kept. Prices that are way better than anything comparable down near the beaches. A restaurant that is very reasonable, and with an excellent menu. Breakfast is free! And, the staff goes out of their way for you. For instance, I wanted to check my email, so they let me use the computer in the office during the evening hours - no charge. We stayed there first in 2004, and then, again just about a year ago. Both times, we were so glad they are there. You will be, too!
