a chambermaid's objective

When you arrive, you'll be greated by a porter dressed in old style uniform, a maid similarly dressed, will be summoned to take care of you and your room, and this service will involve cleaning and mainting the room during your stay. However, the staff can be stuffy and false. Tending to treat each other with disrespect, consequently resulting in low working moral and a constant turnover of staff.
While there, I regularly witnessed wash hand basins being cleaned with the toilet brush, and glasses dried with a hand towel set aside for laundry. All looked and smelled the part, but I hate to consider the germs which lay beneath. All tended to be done in defiance of an unhelpful and inconsiderate housekeeper. Rooms were rarely spring cleaned, oweing to a need to clean 30 or so rooms between us within a particular time frame.
Bedrooms are decorated beautifully, and in strong connection with the rest of the hotel. strong rumour has it, that room 14 and suite 27 have their own odd haunted goings on at certain times in the evening. Many of us were heart feared to clean these rooms alone. Of course it could all be stories.
I will say that the kitchen was run very differently. We frequently enjoyed a treat from the kitchen, and I was impressed by the busy cleanliness of that area.
Absolutley expect to be pampered! This is a hotel of relaxing proportions, and staff do generally like to please their guests. It is however worth bearing in mind, that these poor buddies are being paid buttons for a great deal of heavy work, are not necessarily encouraged by their employers, and rely on guests to appreciate their work.
Despite all of the above, I personally would be happy to stay there, although I might be reluctant to do anything other than store my toothpaste in those glasses, and perhaps not drink fromt eh basin, other than that I'd recommend it.
Another place, a quarter of the price, but situated in Bangor, N. Ireland, is Cairn Bay Lodge....A beautiful quiet and well run guest house, with many of the features you'll be seeing at One Devonshire Gardens. P.s. Not owned by me, but I have stayed there. fab!!
