Hotel Fort Garry, Winnipeg

I guess the hotel was awesome at some point but it is extremely ran-down now. We aimed at a romantic week end in a Victorian hotel. Fort Garry was pricey but the idea of Victorian charm we saw on the pictures online seemed to be worth it. We drove 3 hours to get there. Bad experience started at the front desk. Its edges looked like a bunch of dogs was biting and chewing it and I even got a sleever. Although there was a lot of gold-type shine all over, the pictures were cheesy and demonstrated poor taste. Marble was cracked and chipped off, carpet in hallways also has seen much better days. Even wndows - very dirty; their office-type white plastic style was in severe conflict with the style of the building. We hoped our room would be better. But oh! it was aweful! The room was nothing but really small. Wallpaper were peeling off everywhere, so was the paint. The sink was chipped in multiple spots and the mirror was covered in black dots, one couldn't even see his face. The furniture was unbelievably junky and seemingly scratched allover. We asked to take a look at another room, it wasn't any better. We turned around and left. DON'T go there. Unless you are so tired you don't care where to stay. And even then, something ike Best Western will give you much better quality AND value.

I recently traveled to Winnipeg, and heard that the most elegant hotel in the city was Fort Garry. The pictures on the website look beautiful, but when I got to my room, there was no bathtub, and the wallpaper was peeling off the walls. The walls were thin enough to hear our neighbors conversations, room service brought the wrong food and tried to talk me into keeping what they sent (not to mention all the glassware was cracked), and the staff was not very helpful - constantly telling me to ask someone else. I must say, though, the beds were extremely comfortable. FYI, you pay 1.00 every time you pick up the phone, and if you stay on a weekend, beware that the brunch is not the same as breakfast and is NOT complimentary -- it costs a whopping 36 bucks per person. I would definitely consider looking elsewhere if you want a nice room at an affordable rate.
