Beautiful Hotel
By ,
My girlfriend and I drove from Fargo, ND to spend a weekend at the gorgeous Ft. Garry. If you are looking for a hotel with immense character and class, the Ft. Garry won't disappoint you. It is perfectly located to explore the city, and the lounge is the perfect place to enjoy a pint of Ft. Garry Dark after a good day out and about. Expect a charming room, helpful and friendly service, a great breakfast, and a truly exceptional hotel experience. Don't miss the point by focusing on the size of the TV or the speed of the elevator.

Beautiful historic hotel!
By ,
I have to say that reading some of the negative reviews about the Hotel Fort Garry on this site has led me to wonder whether these guests were staying at the same hotel! My girlfriend and I stayed at the Fort Garry over Thanksgiving weekend while in town for a friend's wedding. From the polite, helpful staff to the beautifully restored foyer, ballroom, rooms, etc., it really felt as if one were participating in a period reenactment from the days of the hotel's opening over 90 years ago. A few highlights: Walking distance from most attractions worthy of note in Winnipeg including The Forks market and historic sites. The bed was probably the most comfortable I've ever slept in. Where can I get a feather bed like that?!? The brunch was absolutely amazing. As if the delicious food and elegant atmosphere weren't enough, guests can expect to be serenaded by a live pianist and bassist from the mezzanine level above - nice touch! These are just a few of the things that stick out in my mind as memorable. I could compile a much longer list if I had the time. Don't let my 4/5 rating in cleanliness scare you away - I felt I had to dock a point in something to be credible! The room and hotel in general were spotless. However, as might be expected, guests cannot be entirely shielded from the work in progress that is the restoration of the 'old girl' as someone else put it. For the most part, though, the 'old girl' is young again. If my travels ever take me to Winnipeg again, I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else. A beautiful hotel and an equally beautiful wedding!

Wow, it was great
By ,
My nephew and I spent five nights at the beautiful Fort Garry Hotel in August. We had room 808, which was totally gorgeous. The beds had feather mattress toppers and duvets. It was like sleeping on a cloud or marshmallow. The bathroom was huge and the shower was awesome. The room was spacious and there was a closet for your clothes. When you open the door and step into it, the light automatically goes on. Instead of having a coffee maker in the room, you call down to room service and they will bring you your coffee or tea AND a cookie. There is also breakfast included every morning (buffet style). There is even tableclothes on the tables and a chef that will prepare anything you like (from scrambled eggs to omelettes to pancakes to waffles, etc.). It was worth every penny with staying at this hotel. The rates were only $139 Cdn. per night. When you factor into having the buffet breakfast included ($16) it is well worth it. I would definitely recommend this hotel to all my friends.

Never again!
By ,
We expected the best but were disappointed. Although clean, our room was very small and the decor left much to be desired. The staff and room service ,I have to say were all good, but be prepared to pay the $11.50 per night for parking.Even though we paid for parking, one night we couldn't find any spaces left, so the valet parked it on the street for the night. The elevators were a nightmare...all slow!. We expected a small fridge in our room for this class of a hotel ,but got none. Sure there's bottled water in your room...but you have to pay $4.50 if you drink it! I have to admit though....the coffee/tea service was a nice touch. You call anytime and it's free, and also comes with a cookies. Once you get past the beautiful entrance and front desk, and exit the elevators, one can sure see the old girl is showing it's age.Sad.

Our exclusive hotel
By ,
There is a group of us from the States that come up for weekend stays perhaps two or three times per year and we never consider any place but the Fort Garry. The reception staff is always friendly and accomodating, the waiters in both the Palm room and in the dining areas are fantastic and friendly and the rooms are very comfortable for our purposes. The Sunday brunch, which is included in the price of the weekend room rate, is first class and absoulutely to die for. The new spa on the 10th floor is great as well. There may be issues with things here and there but overall it's a wonderful and fun experience.

old but good!
By ,
I have stayed at the Fort Garry a few times over the last couple of years. The staff are very friendly and the lobby area is amazing. I love the breakfast and the Sunday Brunch is the best I have ever had and it was included in my room rate. I love the chocolate fountain! You can have free tea or coffee delivered any time and I liked being able to order it for a specific time in the morning so it would be outside my door when I got up. The feather bedding makes it feel like you are sleeping on a cloud. I enjoyed going to the gym, pool and hot tub. As some have mentioned the hotel is over 90 years old and it is actually a Historic Landmark! The front desk agents will give you a booklet of it's history and the ghost stories if you ask. I have read some of the poor reviews and I agree with some of the points made. Yes, some of the wallpaper is peeling and the paint is chipped in spots, but the hotel is over 90 years old! I didn't expect it to be perfect and these small details didn't bother me. I think some people would complain the sky is too blue! I really enjoy my stay when I come to Winnipeg and stay at The Fort Garry. Make sure to look at the pictures of the hotel being built down beside the front desk towards the gift shop they are really neat. The front desk staff were telling me about the new spa on the tenth floor and that it is now open. I didn't get a chance to try the services but they sound great. I would recommend you give the hotel a chance and make your own decision. It just may be your new favorite hotel in Winnipeg.

Clean But That's It
By ,
Very beautiful lobby. Very polite and helpful staff. However, when I walked into my room, it was woefully small. The entire room was about as big as my bedroom at home. The TV was circa 1990. Relatives stayed in a room with a TV from the 80's. I will say that the room was very clean. The bathroom was spotless. Towels were large and thick. I went to the dining room to pick up some OJ to bring back to the room. It was 7am and I had just showered, so I was wearing a ball cap, shorts, and a golf shirt. The lady told me that if I was going to come down for breakfast later that I should "leave the cap upstairs." Granted, wearing a hat in a restaurant isn't the most polite thing, but all I was doing was picking up juice and she got all bent out of shape. Plus, if you're dropping $175 a night for a marginal room, I think you could dine in the nude (ok...maybe not, but you get my drift). That aside...when I made my reservation I asked if there was internet access in the rooms. I was told that the entire hotel was wireless. I thought that was great...since even supposed business hotels like the Courtyards are wired. Yes...the hotel is wireless, but it's not free. They don't tell you that. You have to purchase access through Telus (I guess the Canadian equivalent of a T-Mobile Hotspot). It cost me $25 for the entire weekend. But if you need internet access, you have to pay it. Overall, if I had the choice again, I would much rather stay in a Courtyard...at least their TVs have been manufactured in the past decade. Maybe older people would like this hotel for the charm and Victorian ambiance, but anyone under 50 should stay away.

haunted elegance
By ,
The Fort Garry hotel is a very old, beautiful hotel. this hotel is known for it's strange reports of ghosts by people who have stayed there and people who have worked there. The kitchen, room 202, and another room (I don't know the number) are rumored haunted. I have heard many other strange stories about many of the other rooms aswell.

LUXURY FOR A FAIR PRICE
By ,
tHE OVERALL ELEGANCE OF THIS HOTEL, THE FRIENDLY STAFF AND THE WONDERFUL DOWN FILLED MATTRESS PADS, COVERLETS AND PILLOWS MAKE THIS A WONDERFUL PLACE TO SLEEP. IT IS IN THE HEART OF THE WALKING DISTRICT IN WINNIPEG MAKING IT EASY TO GET TO WHATEVER SITES YOU WANT TO VISIT. BREAKFAST IS NOT JUST A CONTINENTAL BUT A FULL, LINEN ON THE TABLES, HOT MEAL WHICH IS PART OF THE ROOM RATE.
