Mexican Delight
By ,
The hotel and rooms are extremely well maintained and cleaned. The fountains and gardens are beautiful. All the staff is friendly and polite. Their english is not the best but they are able to communicate with you. The hotel is perfect for snorklers and divers. Reefs are close to the shore and boats leave from the dive shop all day. The breakfast and lunch buffets are very good. You can find American food at both. The dinner buffets are all themed and weren't the best. The restaurants require reservations and the food has a lot of Mexican flair. Children may have trouble finding things they enjoy eating. They do one show a night at 9pm. Other then that entertainment is slim.

Headed back!
By ,
First visited in July, '04 and am heading back this month (3/05). This resort is very secluded ($15 cab ride to town), but that is exactly what I want. I have little interest in chain restaurants and cheap silver jewelry, so going into town is not high on my list. One thing you have to remember is that you are in MEXICO - things are different than in the U.S. The ala carte restaurants are very good and worth the reservation process. The buffet is okay too - it's not spectacular, but just fine. This beautiful secluded resort is carved out of a mangrove jungle - it's hot, it's steamy, and yes, the rooms have a bit of a "tropical smell". After the first day, I didn't even notice it anymore. I think all beds in Mexico are a little hard, which is fine with me. This is an excellent resort and I look forward to going back for many years.

Going back again in 2005!!!
By ,
We went in July 04 with another family. We could not say enough good things about this resort. The drinks and food were great, the rooms and the grounds were beautiful, lots of activities for adults and kids, and very hospitable, service was wonderful. I don't understand all of these negative reviews. Our experience was wonderful, we already booked our trip back to the OGrand in July.

Reservationb are not honored
By ,
We made and paid for resevations 6 months in advance. When we arrived at the hotel they "walked" us to another hotel that was marginal at best and certainly not what we paid for. We made reservations thru AA Vacations who were appalled at the treatment given their guests but could not rectify the problem. This is a beautiful hotel but they could care less about ruining your vacation. Once you are in Mexico you have very few options and the hotel knows this. Beware when making resevations and do NOT make them over the internet.

Beautiful resort!
By ,
We had a great time at this beautifu place. The food was good, lots of activities and it's spread out so you have plenty of privacy as well. For my teenagers, it could have used more "action" in the evening and it's a ways from town for them to go on their own. They also would have liked a jacuzzi. For my husband and I it was just perfect -- nicely remote and close to some wonderful photo opportunities on the far side of the island. The dive shop was friendly and accomodating. We would love to go back!

Not Five Stars
By ,
I'd like to initially say that, in spite of my negative title, I had a wonderful vacation. I spent a week in a beautiful location with friends and we specifically chose this hotel because one in our group was considering taking business there. She has decided that her company is most definitely not hosting several hundred people at this resort. The service personnel are incompetent. The wait staff and maid service are friendly, attentive and deserving of an extra tip, even at an all-inclusive resort. But no one higher than them seems to be able to assist you or even to let you know how to find help. Some examples: 1) We did not want to rent a car from the double-priced guys in our lobby. We've travelled enough to know that far better deals are available, often right outside the door. The hotel personnel refused to admit that other rental companies even existed. Maybe the hotel has to cater to the fellows that pay to be in their lobby, but someone could have found us a phone book. 2) If you do decide to make a phone call or two, be careful! One of the on-site employees helped us to make calling-card connections, but everybody else to the person swore that it was not possible to call out of their hotel with a calling card. Not possible?! To use a phone?! How could their own personnel not know how to make a call when they are a 5-star resort? They had two suggestions to remedy their inability to connect your call---drive to town at $16 each way and use a pay phone or continually try the island international operator for help. By the way, when you check out you get to discover that each call to the island operator costs you $3 hotel fees. No wonder they tell you to continue to try this technique! Oh, and the operator was never able to make a connection, but our one guy never had a problem. We memorized his extension and work schedule by day three. 3) Once I frustrated the front desk with my daily morning question about the phone service, they kept "forgetting" to turn in my room repair requests. I think we paid enough to have a working ceiling fan and a shower that didn't fill up while I was in it. Again, I had a great vacation, but only because I was travelling with some pretty seasoned friends and we planned our activities well. I will not stay at this resort in the future. There are places just as nice where the staff is a lot more courteous.

we stayed for 7 days in sept 04. the service was great, staff was friendly and most spoke english. the rooms were beautiful and well kept. each day the housekeeper would make a different design with flowers and bath towels such as a heart and a swan. the beach was incredible the 3 pools were very clean. the food was very good we especially enjoyed the special restaurants that required reservations, well worth the effort to dress up. we will definately be returning to this resort

Fantastic Honeymoon!
By ,
We just returned from a weeklong honeymoon at the Occidental...WOW! Absolutely beautiful resort and well maintained grounds. The staff was incredibly friendly and treated us like royalty. The food is wonderful in each of the restaurants. We especially enjoyed Los Olivos and the Piazza! Being on our honeymoon and also Royal Club, we received extra perks like flowers in the room, chocolates at night, turn-down service, 24 hour room service, free DVD/CD rentals, and fresh towels appeared everytime we returned to the room! The Royal Club is definitely worth the extra money! We recommend the Occidental to anyone that wants to be pampered in paradise!
