Bates Motel - with less to offer.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/30/07
I bid for a hotel in Williams via Priceline before a trip to the Grand Canyon -- I have had pretty decent luck doing this before and we aren't too "uppitty" when it comes to one-night motel stays -- yet, we were TOTALLY unprepared for the horror of this place!
When we arrived, the road in front of the motel was barricaded due to flooding (08/02/07). An officer directing traffic advised us the road would not be open for at least a couple of hours. The parking lot of the motel was also completely flooded. We immediately called the front desk. The owner's wife answered and accused us of lying. She came outside to see that we were correct -- just as we had found an alternative entrace via the back of the hotel. She spoke very broken English, kept repeating "no refunds" and was extremely rude.
We checked in (we were a family of six - thus we had two rooms) and were given ground floor rooms. None of the rooms have king beds nor do any adjoin. The lot was so flooded that the water had crept up into several of the ground floor rooms -- we watched as the owner and housekeeping were sweeping out the water. We had to park away from the door of our rooms due to high water ---
The rooms were stinky and moldy smelling. The walls are dirty white cinderblock -- the floors are sticky and filthy. The dark, dank and dismal feel of the room is comparable to a prison cell -- only less secure. The window locks were broken in both rooms -- and the windows open directly over one of the beds.
The bathroom was passable -- probably the best part of the whole room -- as it was definately the cleanest -- but that wouldn't be hard since the room was absolutely disgusting. The fridge, microwave and coffeemaker were nice. I can't imagine anyone staying long enough to actually use them, however.
Finally, the floors must be made of cardboard because we could hear everything above us. The noise is further intensified by the train whistle directly behind the motel all day and night.
I would recommend that everyone avoid this motel at all costs. It isn't worth the 20 bucks saved to sleep on a cement bed with cardboard filled pillows in dirty linens on a sticy floor in a cement cell. Williams is a cute little town with plenty of decent budget options --- DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE WE DID!!
