ONE OF MANY ANGRY AUSSIES
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/23/05
I stayed there for five nights only two weeks ago - on the basis of a 'deal' made with Qantas airlines - there were a lot of angry Aussies huddled in the "restaurant" Panini every morning - it is not what they advertise. The '5 on-site restaurants' are actually on the street, not accesible from the hotel and they are a Starbucks, a Jamba Juice (juice bar), a Topz (like a Subway) and a cafe serving truly horrible food caled Panini (which is also where the room service comes from.) The fifth restaurant WAS a proper restaurant and bar but was sold (by the new owners of the site) to a Wells Fargo Bank which now occupies the site - so they have simply failed to inform sites like this.
Except for the concierge named Hugo (who was lovely and could not help enough), the staff were sullen and unhelpful, getting information from them was like blood from a stone. They refused to give us the rates for calling outside the local area "We can't tell you that till you check out" (by the way it cost us $13.70 to call home and say, Hi, I'm at the hotel, call me")
The promised internet access in the rooms had been off for weeks and they could not tell me when it would be back on, they suggested I log on in the 'business lounge' - a 3 metre by 2 metre room wth two computers on a trestle table which would cost $30 per hour - it wasn't until day 4 that I overheard another guest asking about wireless access and he was informed there was wirelss access in the lobby (and business lounge) and at the pool) - in other words, the staff will only answer the question you ask, lateral thinking is something they are incapable of.
The standard rooms are NOTHING like the pictures they have submitted to sites like this. Very low ceilings (I'm 5fot 2 aqnd I could touch the ceiling standing on the brick-hard bed) with dark grey dirty wall-papered-walls and the bathrooms had tiny, plastic baths with shower curtains which stuck to you when you try to shower. The room and bathroom are as clean as they can be but they are stained and in desperate need of renovation - particularly for the price we paid. The service award of which they are so proud was not won by the current owners and I doubt they would win it again - if they could, then Ramada is not the hotel chain I thought they were.
If you are willing to pay their rates for 2 star MOTEL standard purely because of it's location (which is pretty good) then go for it - but just don't expect the same standards as, say, the Ramamda Plaza in Beijing - think a best Western that knows it's the only one for miles and doesn't have to try too hard.
