Hotel Elan - not bad at all!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/21/08
We went on a couple's trip to Hotel Elan last week, and I'm wondering if they are reading these reviews, because a number of the issues raised here have been fixed. yes, we did get a couple of mosquito bites (or actually, only my girlfriend did.. Do I smell or something?)
It was kind of strange, since we were, save one or two other couples, the only ones there, and at first it felt a little bit eerie, but the privacy and the personal service we experienced made it totally worth it.
The beach was definitely cleaned up, but it's on the lagoon side, and although I don't think there were tons of aligators at large in the water, it was kind of, well, full of vegetation and such. However, there were two very nice pools, one with a nice waterfall to go with it. Also, for the ones who complained about poor hygiene, it was definitely clean there now. Also, we had a well-filled fridge with water and soft drinks.
The food was surprisingly good - usually, the all-inclusive places have only lame buffet (Did I spell that right? Maybe not.) services, but we were surprised at the quality of the food, especially at Mare Nostrum, the main dinner restaurant on the premises. Yes, the waiters were a little awkward, but the food was magnificent, and they had a good wine assortment too (I can honestly say that I had one of the best steaks of my life there, which was a huge and positive surprise!). Also, breakfast was cooked to order - I ordered chips and guacamole for breakfast, and they made it fresh just for me, which made me hugely excited :-) I know, my breakfast habits are kind of weird, but the point is, they can get mostly anything you ask for in the dining areas. There is, by the way, at least 6-7 dining places, but only three of them were open: The Palapa beach restaurant for breakfast and lunch, and the Mare Nostrum for dinner, in addition to the swim-up pool bar. They were happy to serve you by the pool area at all hours, but did not have room service.
The service was great too - they were attentive and although - as mentioned on other reviews - the waiting staff's English wasn't always the best (the reception staff sounded like they had spent a lot of time in the U.S., so no problems there), they were very helpful and friendly.
If you go to Cancun for partying and nightlife or for a family vacation with tons of kids, this place is certainly not for you. If you want absolute quiet and peace and privacy and time to read books and just relax, however, in a beautiful setting with flowers and fountains in a quiet little Spanish-style village, then this is definitely the hotel for you. We went with the intention of having a couple of days away from the noise and relatively high velocity of life in New York City, and this place, where you woke up with the wind whooshing in the palm trees and the birds singing, was the perfect retreat.
