Best Beach By Far
Yes, you get what you pay for, but the food is good, the drinks are watered down (probably because you can get the all-inclusive plan), and the waiters, while not always smiling, are friendly and responsive. They really work hard walking back and forth between the bar and the beach chairs. Vendors walking the beach are not allowed to come up towards the hotel, so you're never bothered, and there's a security guard always there. People from the hotel next door would try to use the lounge chairs at the Ambiance, even though there were plenty at their hotel. Can't blame them.
There's no ice machine, but I believe the gift shop sells ice, and there's a supermarket about a 2-minute walk (take a right at the end of the driveway). For a 10-minute walk (take a left), you can find outlets, malls and restaurants, plenty of stuff to keep you busy and entertained. Or you can hop a bus to downtown for 6.5 pesos (10 pesos was 68 cents when we were there). The bus stop is right at the hotel, and one comes by every couple of minutes. They go to downtown, Walmart, etc. Read the front of the bus or check with the front desk.
The beach was the best by far. They used a machine to crush the shells so the sand was soft. It was also cool and not hot. We walked to the other hotels' beaches on either side, and their sand had small pieces of shells. The waves were gentle and you could walk out quite a ways with it only going up to your waist. The perfect beach for kids. We walked down the beach, and it got narrower and rockier. At those hotels, there were more people laying on the beach in a smaller area, so they were quite close to one another. At Ambiance Villas, you could have your own palapa and not be bothered by anyone else, even by the children that were there.
The restaurant did not have a lot of different dishes, but what they served was pretty good. And cheap. An entree was 100 pesos (about 6 or 7 dollars).
Bring a money exchange chart. Especially when bargaining with the vendors at the markets. Have a price in your head so when they tell you their price, you can tell them what you're willing to pay. My friend got a nice blanket at a good discount.
The room was clean. We asked for a first floor room near the beach and that's what we got. It had a small kitchenette (sink, good-sized refrigerator, microwave in the upper cabinet), which was an upgrade from what we booked. We did not get the all-inclusive. Breakfast was 95 pesos a piece, and well worth it: made-to-order eggs, pancakes, hash browns (fried potatoes), sausage or bacon, fruit, danish, toast, juice, milk, cereal, yogurt, and coffee.
Steer clear of the timeshare people (about a dozen standing behind small counters). There's an ATM and money exchange counter for money, and taxis and shuttles just outside the door.
We would go back and stay at Ambiance Villas.
