Stay far away

Motel Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz California (as advertised on a large website) rates a 4 out 5 experience by one reviewer. When we got there we found an open garbage container smelling of vomit being buzzed by flies (management did empty this when requested), demolition derby-style cars in the lot and a feeling that this motel was less-than-terrific. We figured the beat up cars belonged to day time work staff and that they would be gone by late afternoon. We took no initial notice of the numerous knife-marked wood rails, wet carpets or cats peering through windows.
Exhausted by a long drive, we locked our luggage in the room and left for late lunch. Upon returning we discovered our door lock had never worked! Some motel denizens had started to emerge from the lower rooms. Best described as drug-addled and scary, these folks seemed to be quasi-permanent residents and unaccustomed to normal daylight. As per our security, management did slap ogether a fix to the lock which could now be easily opened with a wine screw, or a hard kick from a 90 lb teen. We decided to leave before things got worse.
Families, normal couples and regular human beings are best advised to steer clear of this facility.
