Excellent Value

The Resort Suites of Scottsdale was very nice. My wife and I stayed there for our Anniversary get away. Our room was above average in overall appearance, and excellent in space, with a separate living room and full kitchen. The room was significantly cheaper than any equivalent choices when I searched on Yahoo. Numerous pools, good location. Not really a "resort" though, with no tennis courts or large grounds. Their restaurant "Gordon's" is expensive and just OK. Go a half mile to the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess for really fantastic dining (or if you've got tons of money, that's the place to stay).
Scottsdale itself is great for golfers and full price shoppers or lovers of Indian jewelry (more shopping and golf courses per capita than anywhere I've been), and also had a thousand good, varied restaurants, but it's not that great for other things. We were disappointed that it was very flat, not very picturesque, and there were few real attractions. You can see desert mountains, but with buildings always in the way.
The Desert Botanical Garden was just OK. The highlight of our trip was a day-trip drive in a rented jeep on the Apache Trail (mixed paved, dirt & gravel road through national park/past ghost town, past lakes, etc.), about 15 or 20 miles away and about 40 miles long (80 round trip).
Enjoyed the trip but probably won't do it again. We would recommend the hotel, though, as long as you're not expecting a full-fledged, park-like resort or tennis courts.
