Not an International Hotel
By ,
We checked into a dated room with a broken toilet. Any attempts to communicate with the staff were futile (their english was the worst of all the places we stayed in China). The pool was broken and not being fixed during our 4 day stay, the "hot tub" is an extra expense that is really part of the spa (read this to mean: stuck in the open in part of the mens or womens locker room). The food was wonderful, the location superb but everything else was subpar.

Best Luxury hotel for the money in Shanghai
By ,
After reading "3 star at best" rating, I was skeptical about staying here. I'm in the middle of a 2 week stay, and all I can is this place is awesome! For $121/night, it's the best hotel you could want. Great service...awesome breakfast buffet that is included for the price...newly renovated rooms...quick elevators, no wait...good cigar bar...everyone very friendly...rooms very clean...Perhaps the waiter at the bar should go back to bartending school, but that's about all that I can find wrong here. Great indoor pool complex...truly enjoying my stay...Linens are not Sferra (what is??) but they are nice...I'd stay here again. Nothing comes close for $121/night I can tell you that...

Great Location, Good Value
By ,
The Shanghai JC Mandarin is centrally located, which makes it easy to get just about anywhere in Shanghai. If you like Shopping, then this is the hotel for you, because it is located on Nanjing Road right next to several high-end malls. The rooms are clean and modern, but the hotel is a little older than some of the other big hotels in Shanghai, and it shows. The restaurant on the ground floor has a buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and it is always a good place to have meetings. If you need something a little more Western, visit Element Fresh across the street in the St. Regis--it is a great restaurant with an outdoor patio overlooking Nanjing Road. There is also a grocery store in the St. Regis that sells all kinds of Western foods, so you can have your Frosted Flakes and Snickers bar 24 hours a day. Overall, it is a good hotel, and I stay at it almost every time I visit Shanghai (which is about 10 times a year).

Great Rooms
By ,
The rooms are so nice. They look and feel so good. Great Beds! THe dark wood with larges desk and really nice bathrooms. Great rooms. The area is nice with good shops and close to many malls and close to the subway, which is the best way to travel at rush hours. The bars and resturants are good. Why are the hotel resturants so bad in the US? The Lounge is not as good as the Yantze Renaissance Hotel nor is the breakfast buffet quite as good as the Yantze. They are not bad, just not as good as they should be. The lounges selections is not as good.

Corporate Hotel
By ,
Whenever our company folks travel to Shanghai, this is the hotel to stay. The only thing bad about this hotel, while it has done a amazing job upgrading itself, is that the rooms are still not up to the standards of other elite hotels, in terms of cleaniness, electronics, and comfort of the bed. However, the views are great, the lobby is amazing, and the services are for the most part, superb. PS I tried steaks there a few times... dont get them because I always get the runs.

Good hotel, BAD SPA
By ,
Stayed at the JC Mandarin in Feb 2006 for business. The room was good, the breakfast buffet was great, room service was okay. The hotel is close to shopping, but not terribly close to the Huai Hai businesses. The hotel spa had the worst massage I've ever had, very light and the therapist took a call during the treatment. Unfortunately, the spa staff did not understand English. The Evian Spa on the Bund is excellent.

Return Guest for 5 years
By ,
In the earlier days when there weren't as many 5-star hotels in Shanghai, this was by far one of the best in Shanghai. Though in the midst of renovating (for 2 years now), it still isn't as lavish as some of the newer Western style hotels and the JC Mandarin prices have gotten up there for the value. The Mandarin Club rooms offer great breakfast and cocktails plus hors'deourves/desserts daily in their "Club" with some laundry service included in the room rate. Plus a bowl of fruit in the room, free bottled water, newspaper and other room amenities. Beds are a little hard for my tastes. It's very clean, service good, and the location is good if you have business in that district. It is right across the street from Plaza 66 an upscale shopping mall, with restaurants and business offices. There is lots of other shopping in the area too. If your business is in Pudong or Bund area however, it's about a 20 minute or more (with the city traffic jams)taxi ride away and an hour from the airport. Restaurants inside the Mandarin are not that great and you are better off trying the many new restaurants in Shanghai.

3 star at Best
By ,
Please dont believe the hype about this place. It's not even close to being a 5 star hotel. Its 15 years old, the rooms are from the 1980's and its totally dated. The staff, while appearing helpful was not even close to being able to resolve any real issues. They are great with getting your bags to the room, etc etc. But if you ask for help around the city, them to make reservations, or anything like that, you will get nowhere. We paid $275 for a club level room. NEVER buy a club level room as the club lounge is on the 2nd floor and is awful. Its a totally waste of $. Our hairdryer was broken, no iron in the room and the place looked and felt like it you were staying at your grandmothers. All in all, if you can stay here for $99 and treat it like you are at the Holiday Inn, then I'd be ok with staying. if you are expecting a 5 star hotel, stay at the 4 seasons, Grand Hyatt or Shangri la. On the positive side, the location is very good. best of luck.
