The location was great for visiting State College. We liked the charming lobby and cleanliness of the rooms. The food was great.

Don't give these people your credit card. They are cheats. The poor reviews are true.

Unfriendly, unaccomodating and alomst towed!!
Our experience began with a rather unfriendly start as I approached the front desk to ask a simple question regarding parking. An unfriendly female desk clerk answered my question but not without attitude and a sense of 'you are bothering me'. Upon check in, I was asked how many parking passes we needed. Having met up with old roomates for the weekend we came from different areas, so I kindly requested 2 passes. I was then told that we could only have 1 because they were over booked in the garage. Hmmm...not my fault. So I asked where were we to put our extra car?? The unhelpful male front desk clerk laughed, smiled, shrugged and said "There's a lot down the street on Beaver Ave." When I asked if the hotel would be accomodating us for the extra expense he quickly replied "No". Let's chalk that up to two unpleasant experiences so far.... Then....yes, then, upon checkout I went to bring my bags down to my car (the 1 parking pass) and saw a 'Final Notice- Your car will be towed' sign on my front windshield. I was very angry about this since I had my parking pass clearly displayed in my windshield. So, I wanted to bring this to the hotel's attention and returned to the checkout desk. I overheard the people in front of me remarking about the same thing happening to them. Hmm...coincidence? I spoke to the unhelpful male clerk again unfortunately, and again he smiled, shrugged and said "Sorry" in the most unbelievable tone. I am sure my comments regarding the parking situation will go no further than him. I would not recommend The Atherton Hotel to others and I certainly will not be returning to be treated in an unfriendly and uncaring manner again such as this.

Stay Away
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/24/07
Heating/Cooling unit is very old and are very very loud. There is no way that you can sleep with it on. Bathroom fan did not work and some light bulbs burnt out. Even though we asked for the AAA discount when we made reservations, they would not accept it when we paid. This hotel was nice when Hilton owned it but it has really gone downhill since then except for the price, that is still high. There are many newer hotels in the SC area for a lot less.

Your in State College, not a fancy city. This is one of the best here!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/17/07
I lived in State College for several years. This is one of the best, State College has to offer. Why is it a little pricey, because there are a lot of motels and old dusty hotels around here that you would not enjoy staying at... so its much superior to them in that respect. However, compared to modern cities, you might feel less than thrilled to stay here. My mother is a tough critic on hotels and she always loved staying here. She is not a football enthusiast, but she drives out to PennState to go just to the Atherton Hotel Resturant. The Resturant is very gourmet and very well staffed. I think some students from PSU's Hotel Management program get hired here, and WOW do they aim to treat you like royalty. Very nice wait staff here. Maybe if you are in town you should check out the resturant and then decide if you want to stay the night. Around football season and graduation, it would be smart to book rooms weeks or months in advance. I think summer is slwer and cheaper, except around Arts Festival in July.

Wonderful
By brutis, 6/29/06
I live 40 minutes south of the Hotel. I stay there to get away. I love the restraunt. The food is excellent, and a value for the quality. ( The menu was " sold-out" of certain dishes, disappointing) The rooms were clean and the beds outstanding in comfort. ( I have a really bad back). I read the reviews and was surprised at the comments. I am going back mid-August again, Looking forward to it. I have traveled extensively, 8 countries. I love this Hotel.

Poor customer service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/23/05
Management couldn't care less if they resolved any issues you have with the room. All they care about is your money. I have had numerous problems over the years and they have never even attempted to resolve the problem to my satisfaction. Do yourself a favor and don't stay here!!!

Not that exciting
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/2/05
I thought that it was very overpriced for the surroundings. It was advertised to be much nicer than it actually was.
