Ho Hum hotel but staff great
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/27/08
Yep the rooms are rather small and a little outdated but the package deal we had was good value for money. The general housekeeping was of a pretty poor standard, I am sure nobody had dusted above the wardrobe and vacuumed behing the beds in ages. I was annoyed that everytime I put my PJs under my pillow I came back to find them either on the floor or on the bedside table. This is not good when you are sharing a room with someone. It is however very central and we found the staff very accomodating. We needed to move from one room to another because of plumbing noise from somewhere close by. Thank goodness as we were staying for 6 nights. I was really annoyed by that fact that both the rooms constantly smelled of stale smoke even though it is a non-smoking hotel. The staff at front desk were notified and I think they must have done something but I am not sure! Great concierge though exceptionally helpful and knowledgable.

The worst experience
By olga, 5/6/08
I will never ever stay in this hotel again. Our bag left in the hotel's cloak-room was robbed. We didn't want to stay there any longer and checked out earlier. We booked a seat in a shuttle bus. The hotel staff said us to wait in the room and they will call us. But nobody called and we rushed downstairs at the last minute just to find out that the bus had gone already.

select a different hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/2/08
we stayed here for 3 nights. the rate was reasonable but even for the rate i would expect a little more. (we paid only slightly more in sydney and stayed in a pretty nice hotel - menzies.) the room was small, but that wouldn't have bothered me if the room was cleaner and not so noisy from the hall. it needed new carpeting in the room and hall. while 1 elevator was down, you couldn't take the stairs up which was inconvenient. the location is good only if you want to be right downtown. it is near a lot of cafes, but not pubs that we found. i would not recommend hotel welcome.

Room Condition
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/17/07
the room was too small compared to a normal decent hotel. The finishing and lighting do not match the standards of a "hotel". I stayed there for 3 nites. Air con was down on the first 2 nites and I was told the whole hotel was down. No fans, nothing could help - the reception told me. Checked with others the next morning; some said their rooms were too cold! Whole hotel down!? The last nite we insisted either they change our room or give us a fan. They wheeled us a cooler. Bad start to our holidays..This is definitely not a hotel suitable form families..

all you need!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/14/07
The hotel is located in an amazing location right in the middle of the city. Although rooms are small and simple if all your require is a clean and comfortable bed in a top location i thoroughly reccomend. Staff were extremly helpful and friendly assisting us with plans for our stay.

Not so good services and room environment
By lam, 2/24/07
It's good that the hotel is located near China Town and the hotel rate is relatively cheaper. At the day that I checked out, I requested the front desk to call a taxi, she just told me that the taxi is outside the hotel. I have to wait for around 15 minutes to get a taxi. No services at all. The room is full of unpleasant smell and the carpet is dirty.

Mercure Welcome not so hot!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/23/04
Mercure Welcome Hotel rooms were small, the first rooms we got were next to the elevator, (which you could hear running, and wind whistling through the elevator doors from the room), you could hear water running in pipes inside the walls when someone above you took a shower or flushed a toilet. The first night we arrived we walked out to the corner of the street and saw a lot of Graffiti, and before we reached the corner had been approached by two pan-handlers. The Mercure put us in different rooms which took care of the elevator noise, but I would NOT recommend this hotel to others going to Melbourne. The China town area is a good place to avoid when locating a hotel!

This hotel is rated 3 stars, I consider a Motel 6 in the US to be 3 stars, I would rate this hotel 2 stars.
