Great get-away
My husband and I stayed at the Melia May 8-11. Although it was a short stay, we felt renewed! The hotel staff was the most freindly we have ever encountered. We were upgraded to an ocean view room for FREE! It was on the 7th floor and the view was beautiful. The room was great and the bathroom was even better (marble floors, marble walls and a huge tub). The air conditioning kept us cool all night, didn't need it during the day since we weren't in our room at all!! The food was great - the breakfast and lunch were the best, dinner was ok. Do try a made to order omelet (if there is a line it moves fast, but we ate early each morning so there was NO line) Lunch is served outside and the variety is incredible. The fresh fruit is the best we have tasted. Dinner was fine, but I didn't care for the "traditional" mexican entrees, but there were plenty of other choices and the salad, breads and fruit made up for it. The desserts were very good too! Vitralis and La Palapa Grill (al a carte restaurants) were very good too, it's nice to get a bit dressed up and be waited on hand and foot. Easy to make a reservation too, no long lines. The pool is the biggest in PV. It is HUGE. No matter what time of day it was, we were able to find a chair by the pool (shade or sun, take your pick). The water felt very refreshing!!! There were activities all day at the pool: water aerobics, beach volleyball, water volleyball, basketball, etc. The drinks didn't stop flowing! The marguaritas are the best! The snack bar at the pool served hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, etc and was a nice afternoon snack (open 12-5pm) though lunch was open from 1-5pm too. The beach is small but very nice (better than I expected). There were a lot of people swimming in the ocean and the few vendors on the beach didn't bother us once we said no. The grounds were beautiful too, lots of flowers and trees, benches to sit on and garden pools with fish and fountains. The nightly entertainment was ok, good dancing, no singing. But the dancers were very "high energy"! There was also a disco that mostly played mexican dance music so we just sat and watched the dancing into the night. We met a lot of people from the states (San Francisco, Cottage Grove, WI, etc.) There were a lot of Mexicans at the hotel as well and they were all very nice too. There were a lot of kids and families too and the hotel has a lot of fun things for the kids to do and kids shows in the early evenings. We rode the bus downtown (4 pesos each). The bus stop was not marked so we just stood on a corner until one came along in about 5 minutes. It was a short ride. As soon as we got off, travel people tried to get us to take tours but we said no, they did give us a map for free. We headed first for the flea market. It is off a bridge down by the river and most of the shops are the same so it's easy to bargain with the different shops. The restoom in the market costs 5 pesos, but if you have to go what are going to do?! There were alot of nice retaurants to eat in town as well as MCD's, Dominos, Pizza Hut, Burger King but we didn't stop since lunch was free at the hotel! We wandered around the cobblestone streets and small shops, it was very pretty. The Malecon (Boardwalk) is beautiful. The statues are great and the water and the sky were perfect shades of blue. No one tried to sell us anything on the Malecon. We also saw a lot of parasailers, it was fun to watch. We took a taxi back to Melia. It was 45 pesos and we tipped him 5 extra. The best part was relaxing by the pool with a strawberry marguarita and soaking up the rays! Obviously we were very sad to leave but felt relaxed and refreshed. We would recommend the Melia All Inclusive Beach Resort to anyone looking for a relaxing time in Puerto Vallarta.
