Room Down-grade
This hotel is an "OKAY" choice. This hotel is about 30 seconds off of Glenwood Ave which is a VERY congested 8-10 lane mini highway with a 220-store mall complex. Just trying to leave the hotel to find a restaurant could easily invoke an anxiety attack in many people.
Once there we were kindly greeted, we unloaded our bags from the car and took the elevator to our room. To our surprise, we found that we had been somehow "bumped" from the room we had booked over a month before without so much as an apology. We had booked a king bed suite with a whirlpool tub, and what we had been given was a basic double queen bed 'family' style room. A little annoyed, we returned to front desk, (now carrying all of our bags) where we were told that they were undergoing "renovations" so for that reason the room that we had formerly booked was unavailable. They offered a discount on the room, but it wouldn't make up for the absence of the room we had booked more than a month before. Honestly had anyone actually been forthcoming at any point before that, we most likely would have just agreed and retired to the room.
We spoke with a very polite gentleman named "Lawrence", and after some calling around to some other local Marriotts checking on the availability of a king/whirlpool room we were left with nothing. Realizing that we had no other choice we agreed to take the discounted room, and were rewarded with some blush wine and beer from the staff.
At some point that night it occurred to me to check the online availability of rooms at the hotel. Just as they had said, the hotel was completely booked for the night with no open rooms available. What they neglected to mention was that the room we had reserved WAS available for the remaining two-thirds of our stay. Rather than calling down, I chose the direct approach and brought my notebook computer down to the desk and sat it in front of staff. I asked if we could be moved to one of the obviously available rooms for the next two nights, which met with their eventual approval.
The following two days of our stay in the king/whirlpool room were relatively trouble free, with the exception of some hammer banging, and our hallway being cluttered with tools, saw dust, tile grout, etc since we were on an ENTIRE floor that was being renovated. At the time of our 'move' we were sent an additional bottle of red wine which was well accepted, and at that point we were just happy to have the correct room regardless of the renovations. I'll mention is passing at this point that the whirlpool tub offered at this hotel is VERY small. It's without a doubt a one person (only) jacuzzi/whirlpool tub. My fianc and I are very slender people and even we had trouble fitting in the tub together comfortably.
The morning of our final day, when viewing our bill before checking out we noticed that we had been charged ~$40 more per night for the original room we had booked (king suite). This detail was fixed quickly by the early morning hotel staff, leaving us understandably relieved; however it would have been much appreciated if we would have been compensated perhaps with a minimally reduced rate since we were placed on an entire floor of the hotel that was being renovated during our stay.
In conclusion, our overall stay was met with a resounding rating of 'okay' in my estimation. I'd be hard pressed to extend a 'good' rating after so many troubled occasions.
While some of our problems were in fact fixed, and while the staff was polite, we will most likely completely avoid staying at the Marriot Courtyard Crabtree, or any Courtyard Marriot for that matter from this point forward.
