You Will Not Want To Leave!
We like to try new hotels whenever we travel, but when you have such a great experience at a place like the Island Shangri-la it's hard to switch! Being located right on top of Pacific Place and connected to the MTR it does not get much better for having everything at your door step.Shangri-la just offered complimentary internet in all their hotels from Jan.1.08 another added value for choosing this property.

Great Location for Park & Peal
By ,
The Island Shangri-La Hong Kong is conveniently located near Hong Kong Park and the Victoria Peak Tram. My room was comfortable and functional. There was a fax/printer in my room that could be used via USB. The hotel is luxurious in an old world way. The Motherland of China in the lobby is the largest indoor mural in the world. The concierge was especially helpful in getting us organizied for our trips. We also enjoed getting our pictures taken by the Rolls Royce. It would be nice to include a free breakfast in the hotel room cost.

Restaurant Petrus - if you love French cuisine, it's worth it!
By ,
I did not stay at the Shangri-la, but I did dine in what is considered one of the best French restaurants in Hong Kong on the 56th of the Island Shangri-la. The long corridor that leads to Restaurant Petrus, with large windows showing the breathtaking giant silk painting (the largest in the world), spanning several floors, heightens you anticipation to what will be a memorable meal. The meal was very, expensive, and I mean very. Five people, with selections from the a la carte menu, perrier spring water and an Australian White wine plus service charge amounted to approx. $8300 HKD (!). But for this tremendous bill, you are in for a memorable experience. The views are excellent - A full panoramic view of the skyline and of the harbour. The food was top-notch and very flavoursome. I had a boston lobster salad with truffles, a frothy lobster soup, a goose liver confit with black truffle, a slow-cooked veal shank (extremely tender and juicy) and an apple tart (very crispy pastry)from the dessert menu. Every course was decadent as it sounds. I also tried some oscietra caviar and it was of top quality. The service by the waiters was excellent. They knew when to serve or when to appear, refill glasses and disappear. There were two French waiters and they could speak French. A pianist softly plays while drowning out the conversation of other tables, making for a relaxed and sociable atmosphere. An amuse boche was served as well as chocolates and pastries at the end of the meal. If you like French cuisine, it is worth trying, without a doubt. All aspects of the experience were excellent, however, the price can get extremely high without notice. The price of the courses piles up..

to us the best
By ,
Imagine this: its 6pm New Years day you are leaving at 12 and you find you lost your passport. The king of Saudi and 300 hanger ons are staying here and yet, the concierge and three of his helpers continue to work on finding your passport. After finding it they refused a tip. Now that's what I call service and to put it into comparisson, I called the Dutch consulate emergancy phone number and they of course had a recording call during office hours. Simply the greatest in my eyes, Dennis Loeser Amsterdam

The worst serviced 5 Star hotel in Hong Kong
By ,
Thanks for letting me to express my disappointment and disgracefulness with a so-called Five Star hotel in Hong Kong Island Shangri-la Hotel. Even we were just a contractor (our client was the company which rented the hotels ballroom for function), I could not imagine I deserve this kind of service and attitude from these people of this hotel. We were hired by our client to work on providing AV services for their function at the Island Shangri-la today. The event was ended at 6.45p.m., and we had packed our equipment till around 7.20p.m. As soon as our stuff was packed, I went to the Banquet office for a form to leave the building. Since the office (on 5/F) was empty, so I ran down to the Security office (on 3/F) for help. Then, I was told by the Security office that the Banquet office was the only place to issue the form. So, I hopelessly ran up to the Banquet office again to try my luck. Unfortunately, the room was still empty. Therefore, I ran back to the ballroom to seek help. Since someone of the hotel was working in the other side of the ballroom, I tried to seek help from him. Again, the response I got was nothing more than negligence. Oh, then you may have to wait! - such a thoughtful response and that why I finally understood he didnt really need to help us. After a while, this thoughtful staff finally said to us Follow me, I get you form then my colleague followed him. Again, that kind of its not my business expression was still on his face. After another while, they came back with the form without an authorized signature, so that thoughtful staff asked his colleague to find someone to sign the form and asked us to wait downstairs at the exit. It had taken us almost 30 minutes to get to this point. When we arrived at the exit, we found the security booth was left empty, and the gate was closed. Only two cleaning staff were cleaning the floor. Thus, we were trapped behind a stinky garbage storage area. Since we still had the hotel working badges in hand, we decided to return them to the Security office and found someone to open the gate. Then, we were told by the Security office that someone would be down there to open the gate. After at least another 15 minutes, we were still stuck in that stinky garbage storage area. As we found the switch for the gate, we tried to open the gate by ourselves. As soon as we tried to open it, we got yelled by the two cleaning staff. They claimed that they were responsible to watch over the gate, so nobody could open it without permission. While we were being scolded and yelled by them, someone from the Security Office finally show up and let us go. Again, we didnt receive any apologies from anyone in this incident. And it had taken us almost an hour to leave this terrible place. In short, there are few mysteries that keep coming into my mind: 1. What makes the cleaning staff to play the role as security guard in an acclaimed 5 Star Hotel? I doubt that you would like to stay in this kind of hotel 2. Is it because we are not the client, so we deserve this impolite and inattentive services and attitude from the hotels staff? 3. To my understanding, Security implies 24/7 attentiveness, especially for a high-graded service industry. I doubt that you would like keep high alertness as a traveler.
