I stayed at the Grande Hotel Canada for 7 nights and thought that the a/c room was excellent value for money.
I stayed there in early Semtember 2005 and bargained the price down to about 2/3 of the asking price (from memory). The room and bathroom were clean (including the towels), the bed comfortable, most of the staff spoke english and were obliging and friendly. The breakfast was faily average, for a 3 star, although I have had much worse.
All in all, a great place to stay in Rio.
Friendly hotel staff, very decent breakfast in a good air conditioned environment. The rooms are another story! The hotel is in a very noisy location, the rooms are extremely "basic" (but clean), the towels are just OK, the hotel seems to attract a lower end crowd. The bed is very thin and uncomfortable. The room a/c is a crap shoot.
