Definitely NOT a four-star resort!
My girlfriend and I just returned from Sun Village and while I wouldn't rate our experience as "horrible" it definitely had several glaring negative aspects.
For positives, let me first say that the grounds were beautiful, lush, and well-maintained overall. We had no real issues with bugs or flooding (as some other reviewers have mentioned) and our room was decent. The pools were all quite nice and clean, but we only found one adult only pool that had a "deep end". The other pools were all 3 feet deep maximum and usually populated with noisy children. On that note, this is definitely more of a family resort than a couples/adult resort. Overall the staff were helpful and friendly. The juice bars were a nice option and offered blended fresh fruit drinks.
Now the negatives - The food was practically inedible. The Malibu buffet was substandard buffet food by any standard, and the "healthy" options were all sauteed in gallons of butter and very greasy. After the first night my girlfriend relegated herself to a "juice only" diet for the remainder of the stay. We did find that the food in the reservation-only restaurants (Lemongrass and Citrus particularly) were passable, though not outstanding by any means.
- The drinks were deplorable. The wine was as bad as any one dollar bottle of swill one would get at a local liquor store in the States. They had only one label for ALL alcohols ("Classic" was the label) and no top shelf options whatsoever. We ordered a triple shot gin and tonic and barely tasted a hint of gin and that taste was "off". Basically the drinks were so bad they weren't worth the effort. We were baffled by this. It seems that they should at least have had some major label top shelf liquors/wines/beers that we would gladly have paid extra for.
- As I mentioned previously, the room was decent (and we spent more time there than one would hope on a vacation) however, the power went out EVERY DAY for 3-5 hours, usually in the middle of the day around noon. When calling the front desk we were told that they were "replacing some parts" which I cannot say for sure wasn't true, but we got the impression that they were doing this to save on the electricity bill. Made little sense considering noon til 4 was the hottest time of the day and the time when many would be taking siestas or relaxing between activities.
- The beach was scenic, however NOT for swimming. Unfortunate since swimming in the ocean was one of the things I looked forward to. The water was not crystal clear, which I could have lived with were it not for the large treacherous rocks that one stepped into literally 5 feet past the shore line. I attempted to swim past them to see if conditions improved and found that the beach was shallow and rocky as far as 50 feet out. I quickly abandoned this plan and stuck with the pools (which were nice as previously mentioned).
- The staff was indeed helpful and friendly, but the "tour of the grounds" we were told we'd be getting was a simple 3 hour time share pitch. Despite saying clearly several times that we weren't interested and weren't in a position to pay $17,000 for their plan, the pitch became more high-pressure and we were ushered to a higher-level salesman who basically implied we were stupid to not take this "deal".
- Another huge negative was the fact that ANY of the activities we were told were included were $50-100 extra. Had we been prepared and told this, we would have been prepared to pay it, but this was not presented to us this way. No snorkling. No jetskiing. No horseback riding. No kayaking. No windsurfing. Hence the fact that we spent a fair portion of the days hanging out in the room, reading and watching television. As much as we love swimming, one can only do so much of it. Especially when there are no appetizing meal or drink options.
