Smalling Motel South, Potsdam

I have had several occasions a year to visit St. Lawrence County/Potsdam on business over the last 5 years. I have also stayed at almost all of the hotels/motels in this area. If you want a great place for an unbeatable price, Stay Here! The owner was at the desk when I checked in this most recent time, and was absolutely delightful. They have been in business for a very long time, and know what they are doing! The rooms are very clean, laid out in the best possible way. Nothing is broken, missing or unkempt in any of the several rooms I have stayed in. When I checked out, I met a very personable desk clerk who was extremely helpful with a situation I was having. She went above and beyond by calling a business for me while I was gathering my belongings in the room to check out. She told me that if she didn't know the answer to a question a traveller had about the area, that she found she was interested in knowing the answer for the next person...I find that refreshing, Thus the reason for my comment today. Customer service is of the highest priority at the Smalling Motel. Thank you for all that you do for me, it's hard being away from home, but now I think of this place as my home away from home. Oh and the muffins are fresh and the coffee is perfect...don't change a thing Mrs. Smalling!

Better than I expected for the price! Room was very clean and bed was comfortable. Bath area was also very clean! A/C, nice little refrigerator and cable TV all included. I will be stopping there again when I revisit the area. Make sure you book early, I got the last room and called the week before. I definetly would recommend this motel to anyone visiting the Potsdam area!!

The staff was very friendly and accommodating, the room was clean, plenty of towels in the bathroom. Also the cable tv has quite a few channels. Not far from downtown Potsdam and right next to Wal-Mart. Will definitely stay there again next time.

My husband and I stayed here during a family member's illness. We sometimes had to come and go based on our changing plans, and ultimately stayed in 3 separate rooms in a two-week period. Each room was spotless and comfortable, almost like a guest room of someone's home. The hotel is set back from the road and very quiet. There is also a 24-hour Wal-Mart just up the road if you forget anything! The beds are firm and comfortable. The only drawback I can think of is the pillows aren't too comfy, but we had brought our own anyway. The staff was always accomodating and understanding of our changing needs. They also tried their hardest to keep us plowed out during the 2 heavy snowfalls during that time as well! They were often out plowing and shoveling early so folks could be on their way. Overall, a very modest, but comfortable little motel. I wouldn't consider staying anywhere else if I have to come back to the area overnight. They do book up quickly during times of university activities, so make reservations.

Stayed for 7 days recently and thought the place was excellent. Not only was the price right, but the room was cleaned to a sparkle every day. Although they were always full the place was always quiet at night. The rooms are non smoking and it appears that no one has been cheating. Coffee and a muffin available every morning. Full comliment of TV stations including HBO as well as free WIFI. If staying in Potsdam for one day or one week, you cannot go wrong at Smalling Motel.

Wish there were more places like this one - wish they had more rooms, too! LOL Hard to get into sometimes because they are that good! Clean rooms and friendly staff.

I've stayed there on 3 seperate occasions and was more than satisfied each time. Front desk staff was very friendly and courteous. The coffee and muffins were yummy. The room was clean and comfy.

This was an excellent stay for my daughter and I. The lady at the front desk was lovely and quite friendly. Great coffee and muffins in the morning. I felt very safe and the room was very clean. Will certainly stay there again.

My wife and I stayed there overnight. It was around 11 PM when we got there. The lady was courteous and told us that she was giving us her last room. The room was right next to the office and meant for the disabled. It was a more than decent place - very clean and neat, spacious bathroom with the usual amenities such as cable TV. We got a good rest. The check-out time was 11 AM but the lady was kind enough to allow us to stay till 1 PM when I told her that things were delayed and I had to hang around longer than I anticipated. The place was awfully cold with snowfall overnight and the snow had not been cleared along the path, so my car nearly skid when I pulled it out of the lot in the morning. That's a minor point however and I would certainly recommend the place to anyone looking for a decent place to crash overnight.
