Terrible stay - avoid at all costs

1. My flight got in at 5am, so I was rather grogilly disappointed to find that this hotel has employed a cool photographer, the result being that reality looks NOTHING like the website.
2. My "superior terrace room" had one yellow coloured wall and EVERYTHING else - bedding, walls, cupboards, bathroom, everything was plain hospital white! It was musty and everything felt rather damp and cold, but to be fair it was cold andraining in BA that weekend; everything was clean, but NOT at all what I would call a nice looking room, or anything like the website promised. Noidea where the rooms with the cool decor on the website are, perhaps theydid them up for the photo shoot only!
3. The ENTIRE hotel, especially the common areas smell like some very strong, petroleum product based cleaner, and I avoided hanging out in thehotel common areas as much as possible because the smell was so overwhelming
4. The hot water and shower in my bathroom (the Coral room) were dodgy. In5 minutes the water went from hot to lukewarm, and then it just gets rathercold, and on a cold day its just uncomfortable. The shower is a writeoff, the pressure will take you forever to wash your hair if its long
5. Any notions of a homely place with uber friendly staff you might have you should throw out of the window. Although people speak perfect English, this is like any other non-descript, characterless place you will stay at,where the guy at the desk will tell you when breakfast is, when thecheck-out time is, and there are maps etc. at the desk, but my request forhelp with bus tickets was met with - you'll have to go to the bus station(not correct as I later found out, you can book your tickets online withsome of the bigger bus companies without the non-tourist friendly experience of going to the ticket counters at Retiro) and that was that.Staff are corteous, but the description makes it sound like this is one of those places with helpful, happy people - its not
6. This place is a rip off, he staff will try to overcharge you in every possible way - they charged me half a days stay for oversleeping a few hours, even though the staff was talking to me on the phone/in my room all morning, they didn't mention it till I checked out and made it seem like they did not mind at all
My advice: STAY ELSEWHERE. You can stay at other places that provide essentially the same facilities, ie a clean bed and ensuite loo, for lessmoney, because this is a no-frills establishment. Frankly, I don't see theneed to pay for the cost of Casa Alfaro's website developer
