Great atmospheric old hotel
The St. James, where I have stayed twice, is a wonderful, atmospheric old hotel in Selma's historic district. There are period antiques in the reception and common areas and many of the rooms open onto a veranda overlooking the Alabama River. The rooms are nice and clean and the service is adequate.
Although the food in the dining room was not quite as good the second time I visited, the service and atmosphere made up for it. The Southern-style breakfasts in the lounge were fantastic.
My only disappointment was that I did not encounter any of the hotel's several ghosts which include Jesse James and his dog, and a lovely lady named Lucinda, whose portrait hangs in the sitting room.
