What is that pungent smell?
By ,
I checked into a suit and was greeted by a pungent chemical smell that frankly made me cough. I'm not usually one to complain but had to insist of a room change. Admittedly the staff was accommodating enough to change my room. It became apparent, however, that this smell was universal throughout the whole hotel. They seriously need a change of cleaning agent.

5 star hotel it is NOT - The Royce's advertising is deceptive
By ,
On its website, The Royce proclaims itself to be "one of Melbourne’s finest designer five star boutique hotels". It is not. It is far from it. A 5-star hotel does not have cheap shoddy towels with numbers written on them in black pen. A 5-star hotel does not have rooms that smell like a Best Western. A 5 star hotel has a gym that only consists of 1 treadmill, 1 stepper and 1 exercise bike. A 5 star hotel has amenities that are not cheap and nasty. The Royce is cheap and nasty. I was attracted to it by its enticing-looking lobby that looks quirky and eclectic, and yes, from the outside it looks great. Then you get to the stinky, shoddy rooms. Further pain was caused by the fact that they proclaim to have wireless internet... and they do I guess, if you're willing to pay $20 an hour for it. Yes, $10 per half hour. In Australia. For wireless internet access. When I saw how bad the place was, I checked online and read the reviews, and they're all appalling. I wish I had read them first. I hope my review now helps other people considering staying at the Royce. 5 star hotel it is not. There are much, much, much better hotels in Melbourne. Don't be misled by their advertising as I was!

Royal disaster
By ,
Substandard food, black mould in the bathrooms, smelly rooms, terrible security (housekeeping left our room open all day after cleaning it), restaurant closed 3 nights out of 5.

Disapointing experience also
By ,
I too had a similar disappointing experience with staying at the Royce. On arrival at 7pm, my room also was not ready. I had to wait for at least an hour after an international flight, which I felt was totally unacceptable. I also was quoted two different rates for my stay. The shower in my room also leaked into the bathroom and I too also experienced construction noises at an early hour of the day.Overall very disappointing

Disappointing experience
By ,
While the rooms at the Royce are clean and spacious, and the location is okay, I was very disappointed with all other aspects of my stay. Firstly, my booking was incorrect, resulting in a delayed check in. The staff advised me of two different room charges at reservation and check in, and then still tried to charge a higher rate at checkout. Additionally, my credit card was pre-authorised for $400 at check in, of which I was not advised and which the hotel initially denied upon my enquiry. The king-sized bed in my room consisted of two single beds pushed together, the shower overflow ran into the room and I was woken early by construction noise. Overall, there are far better places to stay in Melbourne for this price.

Great hotel in Melbourne
By ,
I've stayed at many hotels in Melbourne - all on business - and this is one of the best. Great rooms, good bar and easy access to everything that is hip and cool in Melbourne. Highly recommend the Royce!

The best that Melbourne has to offer.
By ,
I have stayed at "The Royce" in Melbourne on several occasions now, and after doing so, I can firmly recommend it as "The" place to stay. Located in the heart of Melbourne, "The Royce" is a few short minutes away from the river front cafe's, the "Crown Casino", and of course, shopping on Chapel Street. The rooms (and bathrooms) are absolutely huge for a simple deluxe, and having not yet taken advantage of one of their mezzanine rooms, I can only assume that the experience is just twice as excellent. Staff are friendly and more than willing to help out 24 hours per day, and the close proximity of Valet parking ensures that a getaway is only a few short minutes away. The only negative? It's location on St. Kilda Road is a little tricky to find, and for people unused to travelling through the heart of Melbourne may be in for a tough time. Other than that, an absolutely wonderful hotel that I love to stay in time & time again.
