Spectaculary average hotel

We went to the resort marinha dourada for 11 nights during monsoon so things were different. The room standard was ok. The size of the room was good with a fair sized bed and cable tv. The a/c was poor becuase it was not adjustable so you were left either too hot or too cold. The hot water was nice when you had it but a few times we were left in the cold.
The restaurant was poor - the choice was good but many items were not in stock. We enjoyed a few good meals but the ambience was lacking in the extreme - plastic chairs and terrible jittering music. We were glad to make use of the taxi service every day to visit different restaurants. Our favourites were hotel fidalgo in Panjim, the royal goan hotel mexican restaurant (10 minutes walk away) and capricorns excellent seafood restaurant in calangute. One thing the restaurant in resorte marinha dourada did well was the chips - they were excellent. We felt the food was overpriced for the restaurant. Mains were 100-300 rupees which is quite cheap for UK money but for this money elsewhere you get quality food at beautiful restaurants with lovely charisma.
The breakfast was included and we ate it every day. It was average with a choice of over-sweetened warm canned-fruit juice, coffee/tea, toast/goan bread with terrible jam, and around 10 different warm items. You may choose 1 from each of the above and we ate the french toast every day. It seemed the most pallatable. The beans on toast were suicide and the omlette had to much oily residue for comfort.
In terms of the facilities most were closed for monsoon, but the pools were kept clean, boating was permitted and was enjoyable, the sun beds were nice although you had to keep asking for them to put covers over the wood. We ended up with a nice tan but you have to be prepared to run inside for 10 minutes until the rain is over. The rain comes quicky and goes quickly - it will never be blue sky but usually cloudy with sunny spells and we got tanned even on cloudy days.
The noise level was excessive and we were woken up on 6 consecutive mornings at 6am. The staff are inadequate in customer services and lack authority in dealing with situations like this. The noise was coming from parties of noisy indians using the pool. Never in my life have I ever seen such a comical sight as when I opened my curtains after being woken up each morning. Numerous overweight, hairy, fully grown indian men in speedos - shouting, screaming and slapping each others asses whilst dancing to hindi. The comedy tamed the most of my anger but ultimately It was very annoying.
In summary the hotel is GREAT value and offers a comfortable base to explore from. Go with an open mind and dont expect much and you should be pleasantly surprised.
Also worth noting- Goa in Monsoon was ace, we got dark, ate drank and shopped. The tailors I recommend are Ravi tailors in Mapusa. They were good but not as good as in Delhi or Pune.
