Let your stay in Berkeley be enriched by convivial surroundings. Berkeley Hostel at Piedmont House has mostly private rooms, and very little dorm space...no planned group activities... and is a youth hostel essentially due to its shared facilities, such as 'bathroom down the hall', and a community kitchen so our guests can survive affordably in Berkeley. We are three blocks from The Boalt Hall corner of campus and from International House and a short walk to bookstores, cafes and famous purveyors of international cuisine (Three blocks to the famous Telegraph Avenue). Close by, there is great hiking, museums, and a well-regarded botanical garden.Berkeley's cultural life of music, dance, poetry, sports, theatre, scientific and cutting edge intellectual pursuits never stops. Berkeley is one of the best cross-cultural places to visit in the globe. It is the Mecca where diverse cultures flourish harmoniously together. There are frequently farmers markets. The Piedmont House has a common kitchen area, free WiFi, and occasional shared luncheons.Piedmont House is a 'single room short-term occupancy' guest house located at 2434 Piedmont Ave., Berkeley, just over 3 short blocks from the University. Our private room rates normally start at $55.00 per night, per room, in our lockable, budget rooms. Prices in each class of rooms vary depending upon size and amenities. EVEN THOUGH MANY OF OUR PRIVATE ROOMS ARE LISTED IN THE HOSTEL WORLD SYSTEM AS HAVING 2 BEDS, IN REALITY THESE ARE SIMPLY TWO SLEEPING SPACES IN A DOUBLE BED OR QUEEN BED. In some instances, a second bed or futon can be placed in a private room; please inquire specifically about this if it is your need or preference. Rooms are simple but clean, and unlike some hostels, bed linens and towels are provided. Check out is at noon ON THE DAY FOLLOWING YOUR LAST NIGHT, and check in is at 4 PM ON YOUR FIRST DAY, unless your room is ready earlier. Thanks for your interest in Berkeley Hostel!

Wonderful Experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/08/08
Entering the BCC was like stepping into another world and time. It is an oasis for travelers with its fascinating architecture, many public rooms and two enchanting courtyard gardens. The furnishings in the room were unique--even a drop-front writing table! The walk-in closet was a room in itself. The bed linens were gorgeous--new and luxurious. Excellent mattress. The bathrooms are old-fashioned and small, but I liked the white, airy wrap-around shower curtain, the rain-water shower head, and again the lovely towels. If you are addicted to TV, you should know there are none in the rooms. However, there is a TV viewing room with a large set. We watched about 10 min. during our 3 day stay. The large breakfast room was spacious with linen table cloths! For a light breakfast, it was great with a choice of juices, rolls, granola, breads, bagels, yogurt, fresh fruit and quiche tarts. We're staying there again in August.

Not your typical hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/08/07
Stayed in a suite during the summer of 2002 and had a great view of the bay and Golden Gate Bridge. Great location and it was quiet, but too quiet. The place was half empty. Some people actually live there. The place is so large and quiet, you do not see anyone. As far as service goes, I only saw the front door receptionist. No one around. Parking is right next door and is included. Location is great. I think we were two blocks from Telegraph where there is food and shopping. Rooms were large. Although I appreciated the architecture and decor, the bathroom was not modernized. There were no amenities to speak of in the rooms. Each floor had a TV room - no TV in the room. I felt safe, but the place had an eery feeling. It was dark inside and not very homey. Could be because it was summer. Continental breakfast was nothing special. I would consider staying again if others are staying there, but not by myself. I prefer more amenities and more warmth. I had to think hard about whether to rate this a 2 or a 3 star.

Deception
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/27/05
Gorgeous building. I recommend going on a tour of this building while you stay in Berkeley, just don't pay to stay there. The general manager is an idiot and a jerk. This explains the abundance of deferred maintainance, the cheap beds and their inaccuracy in dealing with their accounts. Also don't count on any help from them from a ground transportation stand point. I am still dealing with them on my bill which was charged on my card a month ago. We left a bag there which they are refusing to send to us until the billing is resolved, even though we have proved to them we have paid. I feel sorry for the architect of the building. She would be embarassed if she knew what had come of her beautiful castle.

A calm stay
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/27/04
Charming airy place. Cool stone in fake Moorish style (built 1927). Bit flakey as a consequence (like too hot to touch radiators). Colonial feeling. Beautiful from the inside (lower floors), but fairly ordinary rooms, however with excellent views across to the Golden Gate. Like going back in time. Not everyone's taste, but I loved it.
