Description

When visiting the Grand Canyon, be the guest of the Hualapai Nation, as you stay at the Hualapai Lodge. Long ago the Hualapai people made their homes in a side canyon of the Grand Canyon. At one time, they hunted game and engaged in agriculture, following the source of water. Today many people of the tribe reside on an approximately one-million acre reservation, which was established in 1883. This two-storey lodge has interior corridors.

BUYER BEWARE
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/21/11
The Lodge is on old Route 66 adjacent to the very busy Sante Fe railroad line behind--trains every 15 minutes 24/7. Our room was clean and reasonably well appointed at the Hampton Inn level. The restaurant food was a little better than average and the prices what you would expect in the middle of nowhere. Service in the restaurant ranged from good to atrocious. Some servers were polite and thorough, others were completely disinterested, particularly at breakfast. If we had to do it again, we'd stay in Kingman and commute to PS to do the river run.

White Water Rafting and Hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/5/11
I did the White Water Rafting and Hotel combo with 4 people total. The pricing is moderate for the things you get. It was my first time at the Grand Canyon, I can't really ask for a better itinerary. You get white water rapids, MANY different mountains on your way, as much water to drink as you would want, a waterfall that can only be accessed via their tour. It was fun. Negative points: 1. Service is hit or miss between person and person. 2. There is a rather active train track in front of the hotel. 3. There is only 1 restaurant anywhere around the hotel and the food is typical American. (Fresh fruit smoothies were good though) 4. The beds were full sized. Small for 2 grown men on each. 5. If the weather gets too hot or there is a storm, they will cancel the helicopter ride. (It happened to us) Up to this point, I would give the experience a 4 star review. The White Water rafting and floating part was that fun. Plus I have a water proof camera taking some great shots. But I am going to have to rate it 1 star because of an incident of poor planning near the end of our trip. After we were denied the helicopter ride, we had to float down river another 1.5 hrs which made the floating too long and it just became hot. Then when we got dropped off, the busses took 15 mins to get there. Keep in mind the temperature was ~120 F. Then they did not bring enough busses that 70 people had to cram into a 50 seat bus for 2 hours back to the lodge. This is an anomaly as far as I can tell, but I cannot let it go so easily.

Very nice experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/10/11
This is our second night here. The hotel was clean and comfortable. The one day white water rafting trip was beyond perfect. Even the food in the little restaurant was really good. Don't be put off by the drive in.

Great package
By Adam, 9/2/08
My family and I stayed at the Hualapai lodge recently. We took advantage of the package including an overnight stay with tickets to their skywalk attraction the next morning. The lodge stay was nice. Especially for the location where there isn't much in between Kingman and Las Vegas. Spent a comfortable night at the lodge and headed straight to the Skywalk the next morning which definitely added to the whole trip and made the Hualapai experience memorable. If you're in the area or are planning on visiting Grand Canyon West, then the Hualapi Lodge if perfect for you. The hotel is clean, and comfortable, the staff was helpful and the convenience of it's location makes it a great stay.

Don't buy the package
By Irene Abraham, 6/14/08
We went on some type of package deal that was offered by the Hualapai Nation for $80/pp. First, they tried to put 4 of us into a room with two double beds (which would have made the room cost $320/night), but after much ado were able to give us two rooms (which made the room cost $160/night) and then had the priviledge of having to drive for over 2 hours in order to get to the West Grand Canyon where we then had to pay an additional $20 for parking. Oh, did I mention the train that goes by the hotel every 20 minutes and blows its horn every time all night long? Sorry, I digress - must be because I am so tired. Anyway, once we finally reached the West Grand Canyon (after having to drive on a fairly primitive dirt road for over 20 miles of dust and bouncing)we found out that in order to go out on the glass walkway, it would have been an additional $30/pp, but our "package" included the fact that we could look at the walkway. What a joke! The 3 sites that they had for viewing were about as hokey as it gets, there is major construction just about everywhere, and helicopters overhead the whole time. Not a pleasant experience, not one that I would ever recommend unless it was someone that I really didn't like... Now that I see that the room can be bought for $50 a night, I could have gotten 4 rooms for almost the same cost ~ however if you choose to go to the West Grand Canyon, expect to pay an additional $30 for the "package", $20 for parking and $30 to go onto the glass walkway. That's an additional $80/per person. Ridiculous and not worth the money, the time, or the wear and tear on your vehicle.

It was worth the money
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/3/08
The Hualapai Lodge was worth the money we paid for the room for one night. It was a new lodge, large room with 2 queen beds, bed linen was new and clean, bathroom was large and clean with all needed accessories. This lodge is similar to the accommodation at the South Rim. They gave us 2 complimentary tickets for a buffet type breakfast and did not charge for my daughter who is 11 years old. Every equipment was in good working condition. I do not know why many people had kept bad reviews scaring people off from this lodge. The people at the reception are not friendly but if you do ask questions they are ever willing to go out of their way to help you out or answer any questions. Beds were comfortable and the food at the restaurant were reasonably priced. I recommend people to go stay at this lodge and not keep negative reviews. Are you expecting 5 star service at a 1 star price. The rates at this lodge is very reasonable for the quality/comfortable room after a hectic drive back from the West rim

I'm A Hualapai
By Cutie, 2/28/08
I really hate dissing my tribe. The attitude is awful and they are rude. Well some are rude yes. They are doing the best they can. I think building a hotel near a train track is not good. The tribe does not own that lodge. It is ran by some company somewhere in the states. I used to work there and they are really short staffed. But, this is a good place to crash but not to stay long. There is nothing to do non the rez except party and throw rocks at the wild dogs. I really wish one day they we will build a casino.....instead we created a suicidal place. The skywalk looks very unsafe. Just have patience with my people ok?

Never stay here. Period.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/28/08
Where do I begin? They claim to be the closest hotel to the Sky Walk. True, if you want to take a dirt road over 50 miles to it, which most of the time is closed due to unfavorable road conditions. Truth is you can stay in Kingman at a reasonably priced place and travel the slightly longer distance, on ASPHALT. Besides its geographic proximity to the overpriced Grand Canyon West (which is the only reason to even consider this "hotel"), there is a train that runs RIGHT behind it every 20 minutes! 24 hrs. Its very loud no matter what side of the thin paper walled hotel they decided to stick you in. Almost comical, the building actually shakes like something outta My Cousin Vinny. The "restaurant" attached to this place has some of the worst food I ever optioned to stick in my mouth, and my bowels regretted it for the next several days. Every employee seems terribly miserable and totally unenthusiastic (Except maybe the graveyard shift lady who helped us take this wonderful picture below). The beds were uncomfortable and the shower made a screaming, terrible sound as it sputtered out its "hottest" 80 degree water. The interior decorator couldn't have made it past middle school: The lighting consisted of two fluorescent fixtures in the ceiling similar to those in a prison and the wiring was completely exposed throughout the room. Thank god the heater's effortless clanking drowned out some of the sounds of the tri-hourly visit from the Santa Fe Express. Whatever you do, don't pick this place unless your car breaks down in Peach Springs.

Planning to Return
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/14/08
The whole experience was wonderful. The accomodations were so pleasant and comfortable. The restaurant had excellent food but was most noteworthy was how attentive and nice all the people were. The artwork was like being in a museum... we have a piece hanging on our wall. We can't wait to return.
