I would never go back... MOLDY and DAMP!
By ,
My boyfriend and I checked in this weekend for his birthday (10/10/09). Not even in the room for 2 minutes and we noticed mold on the ceiling under the a/c unit. We went to the front desk and asked to switch rooms. The lady said no and to check back tomorrow. We asked the next day and they still said no. They came to our room to clean and also covered up the mold with plaster. The next day we wake up to find that part of the ceiling newly pastered fell onto our stuff. It was so gross! I told the front desk again. They never moved us, and every time I asked to speak to a manager, "he was not there." Finally on the last day I called for extended check out and the manager happened to pick up. He said that he only had one report on our room and would not let us do the extended check out (even though I would have paid for it!). There was never a sorry, never moved our room, and they were RUDE!! Unprofessional and they definately have miscommunication amongst staff. Would never go back! Moldy and damp rooms and the elevator was past inspection.

Customer Service 101 Please!!
By ,
I liked the room I stayed in as it was renovated and had a nice flat screen TV. However, I didn't like the way the front desk employees treated me. I arrived to the hotel at 7am from an 11 hour international trip and they told me "check in is at 3PM , if you want to check in right now you will have to pay an additional $30.00" Also, when I came back at 3PM , I had to wait until the room was ready (an additional ½ hour). On top of this, my room was on the 4th floor and the elevator only goes up to the 3rd floor! I had 3 luggage items and the employee at front desk didn't offer me someone to help bring them to my room. I had to ask, and the person who helped me wasn't that physically fit (older man) to lift them up the stairs without banging them against every step! The room didn’t have an air conditioner remote control, I asked for it and they told that there wasn’t one and that I had to stand on the chair and change it from there! The last thing I have to say is, I needed toothpaste, so I called to ask for some and the person at the front desk told me to go downstairs because he couldn't leave the front desk alone and no one was able to go up and give it to me….so I had to go down and get it myself (almost was thinking about doing it in my pajamas!)

Needs Improvement
By ,
My boyfriend, my best friend, her friend and myself drove 12 hours to get to Miami! When we arrived at the hotel the lobby was simply GROSS! It really didn't look like a lobby at all. There were fold down chairs in the lobby,NO couch. There was no room for anything in the so called lobby. The lady at the front desk could barely speak any english. Luckily her shift was up and another lady entered shortly. She told us that our room was currently occupied and that we would have to wait. I explained to her that we had just drove 12 hours and that we were tired. She then said that if we wanted to get a room at that moment we could get a room at there sister hotel The President. I would consider that a blessing in disguise, the President was much better than the Penguin.

South Beach on a Budget
By ,
The Penguin Hotel is South Beach on a budget- if there is such a thing! This hotel is small and outdated, but inexpensive and a great location at Ocean Drive & 15th. The Front Porch Cafe is a great little place to grab a bite and the beach is right across the street. If you are on a budget, and are not super picky, I think you would be satisfied. I would stay here again.

Something special...
By ,
Though it's a just a 3 star hotel...I can't explain what is it that makes it so special. It's small and homey. Front desk - very kind, made- too kind :-) In few words: worth booking.

Nice location
By ,
Service is terrible. Front desk clerk was too busy chatting with someone to check us in. Kind of rude also. Hotel location is great, right across from the beach. Rooms are decent. No frills hotel, decent price considering the location (South Beach). Would probably stay there again if the need arose.

very accommodating hotel
By ,
I liked the hotel because it was small. The renovation was very atmospheric. All the staff were friendly and very helpful. The all white washable bedroom linens were refreshing I would have liked a full length mirror in the room.

Don't expect the red carpet
By ,
Our weekend stay at the Penguin was, well, adequate. Granted, it was the least expensive room available along Ocean Drive, but the Penguin "Resort" also owns the President Hotel which backs up to the Penguin. We thought we'd booked an Ocean view room, but that was not available when we got there so we had a lovely alley view. A word of advice: be sure to confirm which building you're actually booked in. Also, their definition of cleanliness leaves a little to be desired. It could have been the alley under our window, it could have been their cleaning products, but our room and most of the hotel had a unique aroma. In the end, I can't say that I'd stay here again, but we didn't head to Miami Beach to stay in our hotel room. The location is tough to beat: easy access to shopping, restaurants, and the beach, but remember that you get what you pay for. The Penguin may be economical, but if you want ammenities this isn't the place for you.

More than adequate
By ,
I read reviews on this hotel before traveling,so I was familiar with what to expect.Upon arrival,I was pleasantly surprised by the busy cafe located in the hotel. We were conveniently located in the heart of South Beach. The ocean is directly across the street. The hotel staff was more than helpful. The rooms are not deluxe, but more than adequate.Did notice an odor on the stairwell, other than that, had a wonderful expierence and would stay there again.
