Still remodeling, service needs an overhaul
The entire time I was at the GT, I kept thinking of Dicken's Great Expectations, and old Miss Haversham and her dilapidated estate, the moldy residue of bygone eleganace. This hotel has an elegant past, and is in transition, but the service needs a great deal of attention.
There are two distinct classes of rooms at the GT. All are large, a remnant of its days as a luxury apartment building. However, some rooms are newly renovated "suites" with very nice fixtures, stainless appliances in the kitchen and flat screen TVs. The other rooms are old, dated, with peeling wallpaper and ancient appliances. However, the bedding was comfortable and the bathroom fixtures were new. The conference center and certain large public spaces are nicely appointed and updated, and you can definitely see the potential for greatness in this hotel. At present, however, its just not there.
Service is very lacking. Room service closes at 11pm. The front desk staff is extremely non-helpful and won't answer the phone - I'm not even sure the phone system worked for calling the front desk, room service, or the valet. The valet service is extremely overpriced and overworked. The breakfast was mediocre - nothing to write home about. Also, the pool was broken - containing only an inch or two of water.
We were paying much too much for this room on a wedding rate... if you snag it on hotwire or priceline as a bargin room, it might be worth it. Also, it is right across the street from the Fox theater, so very convienent for shows there. I would just make sure you're getting the room at bargin basement prices, or make sure you're getting one of the newly upgraded suites.
