Great hotel, great location too.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/7/10
Great curbside appeal to begin with. Great customer svc, they even upgraded our room to a suite. The rooms were clean, the bathrooms were clean, all was good. I can't figure out what other people are complaining about. Maybe they just love to be negative. But this hotel was charming in a great location. A Starbucks is just across the street. Also Ray's pizza is just down the road! Love that Rays. The bartender was great too!!! The subway is just down the road and there were many cabs in the area. Overall I give this hotel a 10 best rating and will most definitely stay there again!!! Thanks for making our stay so pleasant.

Never Again
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/14/09
We've been going for years and recommending to others, but we will never go back. Just got back yesterday from six days in an unfinished room. No drapes, nothing on the walls. We've put up with a lack of expected amenities (no coffee maker! Limited concierge...) for the location, but this time was galling especially considering how much we spent. The worst was when we left. They had suggested we book a car for the ride to the airport and we agreed. When the car didn't show, they insisted on calling another over our protests. The bellman turned away a cab for the car (the price had also gone up since our first booking) and we saw money changing hands behind the car. To make it even worse, the car broke down in the pouring rain halfway to the airport. We had to grab our bags and flag down a cab barely in time to make our flight.

Never Again!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/26/09
The Hotel had a heater that made loud banging and scratching noises. It sounded like and animal was caught in there, in fact I looked twice. The staff would direct me to other places in the city, blocks away when ever we needed anything. One night I needed a plastic spoon, and even though they have a breakfast on the second floor, they could not find me a spoon. The resturant that opens into the lobby claimed they were a different company, and could not loan me a spoon. The staff at the desk said to go to the Deli around the block to get a spoon. They said they deliver, I told them I needed a plastic spoon and was not going to pay a $14.00 dilivery fee. I tried to get my car out of the parking lot across the street early, but they forgot to tell me that it closes at night and don't open until 7am. They said I could park in the all night lot, and pay full price on 83rd street somewhere. When I asked what kind of service they had the staff person said, none. No services at all. When I asked for a phone number to call or a manager, mum was the word. No manager, no numbers like a Twighlight Zone movie.. I guess if you want a clean Hostel this place is for you, but they have a nerve calling it a hotel. The location is good. Not bad if you can bring your own untensils, water (it was off and on) and whatever else you would have if you went camping. As for me, I like to camp outside the city and pay less when I do. Not worth it.

RUDE STAFF- BROKEN HEATER ALMOST FRIES US ALIVE
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/29/08
the staff was unbelievably rude and unaccomodating...a broken heater blasted firey heat all night long and we had to open the windows and door to the room...the staff did nothing to correct the problem and offered only at $75 credit on $250 room after much unneeded miscommunication...they are liars and honestly don't care about their guests or their reputation...great rooms for sleeping in decent location, but a WASTE OF TIME all together...DO NOT give this hotel your business...

this was a great place to spend a few days..
By Marsha Ballard, 8/6/08
We just spent a few nights here with our 12 and 14 year old children. We opted for the junior suite so a nice bed for Mom and Dad; and a comfy pull-out sofa for the kids - 2 TVs. The neighborhood was nice - a quick walk to the park, subway, museums or nearby cafe or deli. The room was clean and comfortable. The staff at the front desk were adequate. They answered questions and quickly gave information when needed - perhaps a little 'snooty', but I've seen worse. Prices in the city are always exaggerated, but we found this to be a nice place to stay.

Service was appalling!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/16/07
Everything else was tolerable but the staff was one of the worst I've ever seen in comparison to ANY type of customer service. Everytime you tried to ask them something it's like you're bothering them. They're service was below minimum and it was curious as to how snobby some of them seemed when they're hotel isn't that high class.

We would certainly stay here again!
By Melissa M, 9/5/07
We had a great experience. Our room was small but clean and the decor was nice and classic. Our room had a great view of the park which was nice to come back to in the evening. The staff was very accomodating to our needs (1 handicapped person and two babies in our party). Central Park was VERY close so we took advantage of late afternoon strolls every day. We were located a block from the subway station and bus stops which made it very convenient. We ate breakfast at a little deli across the way every morning since the hotel breakfast was kind of pricey for what you got. All in all we were very pleased and would gladly go back!!

Nice adequate hotel
By Jayne Knox, 6/22/07
Okay, anywhere other than Manhatten this would be one third the price... but it IS Manhatten and the Excelsior was a good deal. The rooms were pleasant and comfortable. I didn't try the dining there, but the staff was fine. All in all, it was half to one quarter the price of some similar hotels further south - a good deal in return for a short cab ride. The floors are wood covered by a thin carpet, and squeak quite a bit. My room was very quiet, but I would hate to have someone with kids above me.

very disappointing
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/29/07
Although it is a bargain - the service is horrible. The front desk person was rude and condesending. It was a special trip for us and my husband had asked for a room with a park view. He also called a day before and was assured that there would be one available. When we arrived we were told "you can make a request but we don't have to honor it." Our room was on the 7th floor with a "north city view" i.e. looked out to apartmentment buildings rooftops. The doorman was non-existent and when we asked for an hour extra for checkout the same rude young man told us that it"wasn't going to happen". I would rather pay an extra $50 dollars for a Marriott Hotel with good service. I wouldn't go back.

Perfect for Upper West Side
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/23/07
Just returned from Saturday night stay at Excelsior. Expensive, but there's no way around that in Manhattan. Location was perfect for our plans -- children's museum, natural history museum, concert in Central Park. Room was in great shape. Hotel staff was terrific. We were able to check in early on Saturday and store our bags until we were ready to leave the city Sunday. Hotel breakfast was delicious.
