5 reviews for Irving House, Cambridge
Thanks to the reviews I decided to stay here.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/25/09
The place is c-l-e-a-n. Their price is w-i-t-h-i-n my budget. (I wouldn't come to Boston 2x/yr if I didn't have to, because Boston generally costs too much.) Their staff was helpful. It's only a few blocks' walk to Harvard Square redline subway station. (Be careful not to trip on Boston's idea of a sidewalk (bricks); and if you shortcut through Harvard's property their pavement isn't smooth underfoot.) I stayed up late two nights to read two of Irving House's books (about immigrants in Lexington from India; and a lady detective in Botswana). I slept well because it was quiet and because the bed was comfortable. I'd never used a mac computer before, but its internet is intuitive and it was very convenient to be able to step into the common room to use it. The room was homey. Probably their breakfast and snacks are good but I wasn't able to be there at those times. There was a small grocery store and a neighborhood pharmacy nearby and many restaurants in walking distance. I'll be back off-season to stay at Irving House again.

Good value, with close proximity to Harvard Yard
By Elena, 05/18/08
This B&B is nice & cozy, with very friendly staff and there were always goodies/ snacks at the basement and coffee and tea is available until 10pm. The morning breakfast was lovely, though the variety could be a better (u can get sick of it if u are staying at Irving House for a week). The room was clean & toilet was spank. Irving is close to Harvard Yard and a 10min walk to the shops at Harvard Square. Overall, gd value but recommended to stay here if u are visiting Harvard campus. If u are intending to tour Boston, then u might wanna choose to stay in a downtown hotel, or 1 that's in Harvard Square, near the subway.

Worst place in the universe

They speak so sweet when you call and when you visit. As soon as you arrive, they take your credit card and charge you. In any decent hotels, you can cancel it and get the money back but not here. They claim, they are eco friendly, userfirndly and all drama. Please be sure beofore you give your credit card, once you do, you have to either stay or leave without your money. best luck- SAM

Just enough like Home!

Well, it must be nice because I have come back again and again...My first visit was in Sept. of 2006 and my last few this past late summer. Everything here is very consistent. The staff are accessible and very friendly. Each room has its own color theme of pastels or jeweltones with nice cotton quilts on the beds. If you are fortunate to get a private bath, there will not be much room but it will have everything you need. There seems to be an almost 1980's Euro (probably German) feel to the whole facility. Many more conveniences than a euro bed and breakfast though, thankfully. Overlay that on a turn-of-the-century redo and it has a comfortable quaintness. There is a main lounge with a shared computer but don't expect to log into your aol mail and actually read it- the Mac Safari program will show you your mail list but if you try to access a message it will just delete it- wish they could fix that. You can access the internet from your room with their passkey for the new wireless system, I guess, but we have never actually gotten that to work, and neither did my daughter when she stayed there in a small single with shared bath this Fall. What I really like about Irving House is their true Hospitality- good breakfast, albeit a cold one. Lots of choices and great beverages, including the peach tea in the fridge all day long. This B&B also has a casual atmosphere where you feel comfortable taking your coffee out to the any one of the front outdoor sitting areas and having a cigarette. I have also frequently brought beer which I have kept in the downstairs fridge for evening lounging outside in good weather. The location is fantastic just minutes from Harvard Square by foot. It is true that if you bring a car you will have nothing but trouble...the number of parking spaces is low but even more problematic is the narrowness and how they are placed along the fence and then at the back of the building. Good luck getting into ANY of them. I have lived in England and thought I would never again see such inane parking configurations, but I was wrong. I just wish they would rethink the whole thing and face the fact that they really have space for 4 parking slots in the back and just the one front handicap at the driveway/side fence and be done with it.

Wonderful place to stay!
By Dan, 11/16/06
I spent a night at Irving House in July 2006. I originally reserved a room with a shared bathroom, but I had the good fortune of being given a free upgrade to a room with a private bathroom. The room was very tastefully arranged with beautiful light-green carpet that I still remember, tasteful wood furniture, and a comfortable bed that provided me with a great night's sleep--which was very important since I had to take a Massachusetts teacher licence examination the next day at the Cambridge Rindge & Latin School a very short walk away. (By the way, I just spent last weekend in Cambridge to take another test and the Best Western Hotel Tria bed I slept in was extremely uncomfortable and made it very difficult to get to sleep, even though that hotel was rated 3 stars by Expedia, which showed Irving House as a 2-star B&B. I would have stayed at Irving House last weekend, but all of its rooms were booked). Even more outstanding than the furnishing and style of my bedroom and the hallways was the outstanding, professional, and very kind and friendly staff of Irving House (again, much better than the staff of Hotel Tria). They were receptive to my questions and very helpful and pleasant to talk to. Irving House also offers a good, free continental breakfast and free wireless Internet access, both of which I was happy to have and take advantage of. Irving House is about 6 miles from Boston Logan Airport (BOS) and, although I had rented a car when I stayed at Irving House since I didn't know the area (and neglected to ask about public transportation) I since discovered that Irving House is very accessible via public transporation using the "T." You can walk about 15 minutes from the Harvard Square subway stop. However, although I didn't use them, I also noticed buses running much closer to Irving House (about a minute's walk away). The only negative point about my Irving House experience was the considerable difficulty of parking in their parking lot which requires you to maneuver (usually by backing-in) your car through this very narrow lane between the side of the building and a fence. There also didn't seem to be many parking spaces, although maybe the number of parking spaces was OK, as I'm not sure how many rooms Irving House has. In summary, though, I found that Irving House was a great place to stay if you want a pleasant, comfortable room that is mass transportation-accessible for a good price (I paid $113 for my one night arranged directly with Irving House, including all taxes) with great staff and free wireless Internet access and continental breakfast! I highly recommend it!
