Not a fan
First the positives:
1) This would be a good place for college-aged party people who are in South Beach just to drink, dance and sleep.
2) The staff were reasonably helpful in terms of directions.
3) The location is fabulous - right in the heart of the action, so we could walk everywhere - the beach, restaurants, parks, shops, etc.
4) They give you beach towels to use.
The negatives:
1) The room was superficially clean. It seemed alright when we walked in, but was not really the case once we settled in: The lavender paint job was sloppy and there were spatters on everything, including the lamps, walls, etc. There were long hairs stuck to the back of the bathroom door, and even a hair that appeared to be painted onto the door. There was a toothpaste cap stuck in the sink drain. No cleaning staff ever came by the entire first day we were there so we had no replacement towels and almost ran out of toilet paper by the time we checked out.
2) The elevator broke down for a few hours every night we were there, and I noticed that the license on the inside of the elevator had expired in Sept. 2007. The staff person working right next to the elevator said nothing while my daughter and I walked in to try to use it. Finally when we walked out and asked, he said "Oh yeah, it just broke down, you'll have to use the stairs."
3) The hotel itself wasn't overly noisy, but the windows were pointless - we may as well have had none. Every last minute sound from outside echoed in the room, from passing cars, to conversations on the street. Plus the valet parking guys work out at the back lot and often find the owner's car by pressing the car's alarm button and then following the sound. This woke our baby up at least twice.
4) On the website they said they charge between $16 and $25 for valet parking. The first night was $25 (a Wed.). The second night they tried to charge $30 but my husband said no, and they finally agreed to $25. The final night they said we had to pay $50, so we parked on the street instead and bought a parking pass.
5) We had to leave the hotel at 4am to take our rental car back. When we went to check out we had to make noise to wake up the guy sleeping in the back room to come out so we could turn in our keys and check out. I gave him our keys and he said "sorry I can't check you out. Our computers are down. Have a nice trip." When I asked how we were supposed to do a final check out he said that if we wanted anything like a receipt or something we'd have to call them later and they could email us something.
All in all, while it wasn't a horrible experience, I definitely wouldn't bother staying here again. I had read a lot of reviews before booking a room at The Kent and it seemed like a good value, so I thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt. In the end, I'd rather spend a little more and stay at a nicer place.
