3 reviews for River House Inn, Snow Hill
A beautiful experience.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/20/05
The River House was more than we expected... It is hard to know where to start so I'll break it into categories. The house: We stayed in the house so I cannot review the cottages, though the word is that the cottages are even better. The decor is exquisite, and the art hanging throughout is exceptional. I never felt like I was imposing on the innkeepers and found beauty in every corner. The exterior is beautiful...I just can't believe I forgot to take a snapshot of the front! The room: We had a wonderful suite on the second floor with a comfortable bed and a private bath. The bed was comfy and soft, and the room spacious and tastefully decorated. They used window air conditioners, but I prefer this, as it allows me to make it nice and cold at night, the way I like it. I also like the noise of the fan, and it was nice to have white noise for my sons. Plenty of hot water too... No internet, phone or TV in the room, and in my book, this is a plus. There is internet access in the business center a block away, so you're still in touch if you have to be, and the innkeepers are net-savvy so you can communicate with them via email if you prefer. The atmosphere: I felt secure and welcome. I didn't even need to lock my door. It was casual enough that I felt comfortable being there with my two young sons, but enough of a getaway that I could easily imagine a quiet honeymoon there. I stayed at a B&B in Maine a few years ago that the owners decorated with "art" from their travels, and though they thought they were showing treasures, they had their historic home sprinkled with tacky reproductions and strange items that made no sense...like a plastic doll wearing a graduation cap! Nothing like this would be found at the River House, thank goodness. I'm always wary of B&Bs since then, so I was relieved to see all of the period furnishings and beautiful art works. The grounds: A short walk in the garden was wonderful...passing by a koi pond and then a gorgeous new pool which was heated to the perfect temp. The pool area was definitely resort-grade, not just a pool in someone's back yard. Beyond that, there are lush grounds that lead out to the river. It was simply beautiful. The innkeepers: Sweet and sincere people... relaxed and accommodating. Not pushy or intrusive. Since they knew we were traveling with children, they set up a pack-n-play for my 6 month old, and surprised me with a toddler bed for my 3 year old. He was really delighted with his "special bed." The town: Quiet but cultured. Not a lot to do, but you don't go to Snow Hill to "do," but more to "see" and relax. It is a town made for a contemplative getaway. Even so, while we were there, we enjoyed a dinner theater and had a rolicking time with the locals at the wine/beer/piano bar. While you're there, enjoy the art gallery, Bishop's Stock. Definitely not what you'd expect from a typical small town. My only wish is that they had more dining options in town. I highly recommend the River House Inn if you're interested in a quiet getaway in Snow Hill or that general area.

A great place on the river
By Kathleen, 05/20/05
The cottages are luxurious and well appointed. Each comes with a whirlpool tub, TV, VCR. Fireplaces, river views, and a pool add to the amenities. The town of Snow Hill is a delightful place. It is near Ocean City, MD.

A big disappointment
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/10/04
We recently spent two nights in The River House Inn in Snow Hill, Maryland. We selected this inn, which is about 20 miles from Ocean City, MD, based on its web site which depicted well maintained grounds, rooms, great amenities; and the fact the inn is pet friendly. Well the stay turned out to be a disappointment. We paid about $420 with taxes for two nights. In our judgment, the rooms were about $200 overpriced.

On the positive side, the innkeepers have two very pleasant and friendly standard poodles named Peaches and Rosalie. Our two dogs felt right at home with them. There were dog bones and dog bowls in the room. In addition, there is a nice swimming pool area complete with a gazebo. Finally, the size of the room we had was large and it had a nice gas fireplace and attractive Jacuzzi.

The negative side of the ledger is lengthy. First, we selected the Garden Room because it was supposed to have breathtaking views of the Pocomoke River from an outside porch. What we found was that the porch was largely unusable. After we swept the large accumulation of leaves off the upstairs porch, we still found the porch uninviting because the furniture was filthy and moldy. The grounds were buggy and not well maintained . Second, though the Pocomoke River is a beauty, the Garden Room is at least 100 feet away from the River and the view is substantially blocked by trees and leaves. Third, the room which was once stunning, is in definite need of an upgrade. The carpet has several large stains and the wall paper is peeling in several places. We were also disappointed because the carpet had not been well vacuumed. The tile in the bathroom needs new grouting. Except for one corner, the room is quite dark and new lighting is need in several corners and in the bathroom. One lamp had a burned out light bulb and though we got it replaced there was no apology. The throw rugs in the bathroom are worn and the bathrobes hanging on the bathroom door are old and soiled. Fourth, the inn is not a very inviting place. The owners obviously like their privacy. None of the rooms in the elegant main house are for guests to stay as they once were. And, in the morning breakfast is not served in the large, well appointed dining room. In fact, we spent less than 5 minutes in the main house. Refreshments are served on a small outdoor porch. There is no morning coffee. There are signs around the house directing people to enter the inn from one location only and not to enter the others. Fifth, the breakfast was disappointing and definitely not up to the standards of a B&B charging $200 plus a night. In the a.m., the innkeepers bring you a basket. It has rolls, eggs and sausage, or an omelet. There is some fruit, orange juice and two bags of coffee which you have to make yourself in the room's coffee pot. Though china and utensils are provided, the eggs and sausage come in tupperware containers. Sixth, the town of Snow Hill turned out to be a big disappointment. The town has a couple of shops and a few antique places. There are several boarded up shops and the town does not appear to be thriving. The inn does not offer lunch or dinner. Though there is one place to get lunch in town that is nice, the sole dinner restaurant is very poorly appointed, has lousy food, and allows smoking in the adjacent bar. We ended up driving to Ocean City one night for dinner which was fine though over a 40 mile round trip.
