Two rooms, two nights
By no, 8/12/09
We just returned from a weekend in Amsterdam and stayed at the PP Victoria Hotel. We had two very nice rooms. The rooms were very clean, spacious, and a very good value. We did not eat in the restaurants but used the staff to direct us to great places nearby. We arrived by train from Frankfurt and the station was directly opposite our hotel. Trams and walking both great ways to see the sights of Amsterdam and the public transport system is superb. Everyone spoke English perfectly and it was a reasonably priced get away. Our kids enjoyed the pool and the rooms and the location. Please consider this a good choice for family.

Have you ever been treated as a criminal?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/5/09
Have you ever been treated as a criminal? No? Then this is the place to be. In the evening of 05-05-2009 me and my girlfriend walked my cousin back to his room. On our way out my girlfriend needed to visit the ladies room, so I waited in the lobby. While I was waiting in the lobby I was looking back at the nice evening I spent with my cousin. This was about to change....The next thing I see is my girlfriend being escorted to the exit. I walked towards the staff at the exit and ask if there was a problem. It turned out my girlfriend got lost and ended up in a restricted area. I was rudely approached by Max and was treated in a manner not heard of. I tried to explain why we were there, but this was not satisfactory to Max. Basically Max didn't want to hear anything about it. He was very rude and not understanding. In the future I will not be recommending my family or friends to stay at this hotel. The staff is rude not understanding and verbally aggressive. I hope this review will help you make the right choice. Kind regards, Steven.

Close enough to perfect
By Dr. Burlough, 5/5/09
My hot button is hotel doors that SLAM!!!, shaking everything on the floor. Vic has mostly solved this problem; other hotels further down toward Dam Square ares still trying. Hotel was jammed for Queen's Day, every room sold. I'm a picky guest, nothing negative that affected our enjoyment; not a single gripe about service. Amazing! Of interest only to those with white gloves, there's scuffs, carpet needing repairs, chipped tiles, other cosmetic defects. The 'radio' contraption fitted into the bedside is from the 50's, when no dial was needed, four or five buttons were pre-set for various radio formats. And bring your own alarm clock. I'd stayed at the Vic a decade ago, it hasn't been upgraded, but entirely adequate, far nicer than I'd remembered. And the doors don't SLAM! As a result of Queen's Birthday, prices were likely at their highest year-round. I rate the Value at about half what the prices would ordinarily have been.

Great Location
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/23/09
We got off the plane, caught the train from the airport with one stop, walked out of the station to see the Hotel right in front of us, so minimal stress in getting there. The Hotel room was a reasonable size with all you need for short stay and even though we were looking out over the bus station and street, with the windows closed the noise was minimal. Good selection at breakfast set in a nice clean dining area. Buffet self service, which you could return to as many times as you wished. On the last day of our two day visit as we were getting packed to check out when the safe decided to lock itself. It did take three requests and one and a half hours before someone came to our room to open it for us, which was a little frustrating when we only had a morning to do some more sightseeing. We were a little disappointed in the maid services as glasses that had been used were not cleared away and there was no milk for the tea and coffee. All that being said they are only minor points on what was great weekend. The staff were all very friendly and helpful on the whole. Very few authentic Dutch Restaurants though, we discovered Haesje Claes on Spuistraat in the Historical quarter - really special place.

Great until the last night!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/4/09
Hotel location is perfect, could not be better and most of the staff are very polite and helpful. Rooms are big enough, the bathroom is adequate but i was expecting better (i love bathrooms in hotels...its the 1st thing i check on arrival!!!) Anyway, our 3 night break had been going perfectly until our last night..at 4am the hotel duty manager let himself into our room and started shouting that we had been smoking!! This was not the case and the hotel corridor had smelt of 'narcotics' (as he said!) since our arrival, but the manager would not listen. Without permission he charged 400euros (approx £360) to my credit card and only informed me about this after we argued that we had not been smoking in the hotel. He said that he could smell it in the corridor and it was too late as he had already taken the money from my card. If it had not been 4am and i had been more alert i would have argued with him further but decided to sort it on check out the following morning. However, we had an early flight and did not have time to sort this so i have sent a number of emails to the hotel asking for my money back and i have yet to hear anything back. I recommend if anybody stays here and are on the non smoking floors (as we requested due to being non-smokers!) that if you smell anything you should inform reception before any mis understanding occurs! This is the only reason i have given them 3 stars for service...it would have been 4 or 5 without it! Other than that incident, hotel and city amazing!!

Nice and clean modern hotel, a welcome site from the rail station (just across the road). Nice and corteous staff, clean rooms, with good choice of tv (although if you have children with you make sure they dont sneak a look at channels 13 & 14). Bar staff excellant, bring you drinks and a fantastic selection of nibbles. Very polite!! Conceirage booked us a grat candlelight pub cruise - by boat on the canals 10 out of 10 for that recomendation - thanks

Heading Back Soon!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/18/06
Our room was not ready on arrival, still not ready by four, by half gour they kindly upgraded us to a suite which overlooked the canal. This made up for everything and the staff were fantastic. That was our first visit and we are going again in October and November this year and would not stay anywhere else. Location is as good as you can get. Our room was cleaned every day to perfection and 24 hr room service was great. We got engaged while we were there and the staff were so good to us. we now email them directly and cant wait to see them next time, they have promised us a lovely room with a nice view for our next stay.... What more does anybody want!!!

Convenient, Four Star, Downtown Hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/27/06
I've stayed at the Victoria three times now, and have been pleased each time. Check in and check out have been a breeze. The rooms are clean, nicely appointed, and relatively spacious. Directly across from Central Station, the Victoria could not be more convenient - especially for a first time vistor (it certainly takes a day to learn the lay of the land). Almost all northward bound trams eventually end up across the street from your hotel, and every taxi driver knows the quickest route back to the train station. Location could not be better. From the airport, take a 15 minute train ride to Amsterdam Central Station, and then you are a three minute walk from the hotel. In front of Central Station is 'Stationsplein' where trams leave every five or ten minutes for anywhere you could possibly wish to go. In front of Stationsplein are the canal boat docks from which you can take tours, cruises, or go from point A to point B via water instead of via a land-based taxi or tram. Most of the restaurants directly surrounding the Victoria are tourist traps. Get over to either the Joordan or Spui areas to find some great lunch or dinner (both are five minute tram rides or fifteen minute walks). The hotel bar and restaurant are nice, as are the bellmen, housekeepers, and front desk staff. The Victoria is a great value, and a very nice hotel. The only negative is that all secondary charges (minibar, photocopies, cashing travelers checks, internet access, etc) are very, very pricey. They automatically charge you for breakfast ($20 pp per day). Remember to ask to have those breakfast charges removed before you leave. I doubt that I would stay anywhere else when in Amsterdam.
