Stay here if you get a cheap price, great location.
I've recently stayed four nights at the Strand Palace Hotel. I found a very good price on the internet and got the fourth night free. I booked a standard single. No breakfast included, I bought my own breakfast at the grocery shops and at Pret A Manger close to the hotel. The best thing about the hotel is the location, all sourrounding hotels costs more. You can walk to so many places from this location, which I did...I had planned to take a hop on hop off bus but I ended up walking everywhere exept for a journey to camden town. If you arrive at Heathrow you can take the Piccadilly line from the airport directly to the tube station close to the hotel, Covent Garden station.
I got a room on the first floor facing the inner part of the hotel, it was more like ground floor. I thought the window was open due to this noise inside the room, I looked and the windows where closed...but soon noticed that the isolation was really bad...and the windows did not seem so safe to me...not so nice being a single person travelling and staying in that kind of room on ground floor. The noise was coming from some kind of aircondition machine outside the window...and I thought I'd much more enjoy the noise of traffic and ppl on the street that a constant noise that never changes. Regardless of how little you pay for the room you should at least feel safe. So I went to the reception and told them about the room and I got a new room straight away without any problems. I was happy they understood me.
My second room was on the fifth floor facing the street, this room was larger as well. Everything was clean, not too warm and not cold either...it was ok air. This room also had double windows, the old windows and new sliding ones.
Each day you get clean towels and the bed is made. I always locked all my things inside my baggage, I've read someone had something stolen inside their room so just to be on the safe side -never leave anything outside.
The bathroom was large and bright.
I'm used to the scandinavian hotel standard, so I really missed a minibar to chill drinks and other foods.
A lot of buildings in central London are really old and therefore the interiors are often a bit rundown as well...the same with the Strand.
I did not feel completely safe however even on the fifth floor, I had ppl calling my room during night time and then hanging up...and one night I woke up and a young bloke was screaming and being very angry outside in the corridor... The doors are not the safest kind.
I saw no security in the entrance hall, there are many staff but no one that made themselfs visible as security.
So I would not recommend single travellers staying at this hotel, you might not get a very good nights sleep.
The hotel is alright by english standard and great because of the exellent location. It's also good that they have a concierge desk, I only used it to buy a street map.
Stay at this hotel if you find a great price and travel with others.
