Would never go back!

It is old, floors creak rooms are small. Everything is outdated. Noisy! Food not good! Personal friendly and helpful the only nice thing I could say about the place. It was a nightmare!

Wedding disaster
By ,
We booked the Christopher Wren for our dream wedding in October for it's location right on the Thames and it's reputation for excellent service. Poor service, small breakfast, no robes for the brides and bridesmaids, no hot water for any guests who stayed at the hotel and 60 guests who ate at the wedding breakfast got sick. To top it all, the hotel did not care as they had already been paid! Not bad for £15k!!!

Check your booking and don't expect English hospitality
By ,
After booking a relaxing break for my mother through laterooms, I found that the booking had not been made the day before she arrived. Upon checking with laterooms, they contacted the hotel who said that they would organise a room for her and that it was alright. Unfortunately at no point were we told that a different room was offered and my mother was put in an apartment away from the main hotel. This entailed a three flights of stairs walk plus the walk to the hotel to get any of the facilities and even breakfast. Given my mother's age and medical condition, this was not suitable and she checked out after two nights. When I checked with the hotel I first got to speak to a sarcastic South African 'woman' who laughingly told me she'd forward the information on to a manager who would get back to me the next morning. When I received a call the next afternoon I was told it was my mother's fault for not complaining and they would have moved her and we should be grateful for being upgraded to an apartment rather than being in the hotel with it's facilities. If other rooms were available, why was she put in the apartment in the first place and not that which was booked? Certainly a hotel that is being run like a lot of tourist traps in this country - hire foreign staff that have no idea of this country or customer service. Great for stinging Americans wanting to see Windsor but not for locals wishing for a taste of old English hotels. Definitely worth booking through a discount place like laterooms as then you can complain loudly about how poor the service is and how much you paid - to the chagrin of those suffering full rate!

Pretty location, poor management
By ,
We arrived at this hotel after a long flight from Australia. It has a pretty location and plenty of character and was situated between a pedestrian precinct of Thames Street and the River Thames. However it is not convenient to Heathrow Airport, being 12 miles away. We were lucky to have arranged a lift by private car. There are no train or bus services nearby. Parking is difficult. The hotel is well located for those who want to visit Windsor Castle or Eton College. Both are within 10 minutes walking distance. The foyer is very small and inadequate and check-in was slow but polite. We booked through Laterooms and did not get the twin executive room we'd reserved and paid for. This was not the hotel's fault. The standard room however was very clean and well furnished with a good bathroom, air conditioning, tea making facilities and comfortable beds. The English breakfast which we paid 14 pounds for was adequate although the waitress didn't know what black pudding was(even though it appeared on the menu and was meant to be included). The view from the restaurant onto the Thames was lovely but none of the staff were English so ordering wasn't easy. We weren't impressed with the managers who failed to solve any of our problems - a late check out could not be organised, and the duty manager sighed when we told him of a leak which had appeared under the carpet in our room. He gave us a towel to mop it up but made no arrangements to fix it. In conclusion we were disappointed in the standard of service by the management. There appeared to be no English staff and the atmosphere reminded me of a ship without a captain. My advice to anyone staying at this hotel would be to book through a discount website. You are likely to be very disappointed if you pay the normal prices which are very high for what you get.

A mile from Eton College
By ,
This is a 17th century house that was converted into a hotel. It is a few yards away from the River Thames -- across the river, about a mile away, is Eton College. Windsor Castle is just a short walk away. The small room that I stayed in was very clean and comfortable. Bed was very firm. The room I stayed in had a large window that shows the courtyard. In the morning, full English breakfast was served in the ground floor, main dining room, (that I think, was the best part). It was delicious. One night in a single room was not cheap (about US $200) - I expected more for that price, thinking that had I stayed a week, it would have been over a thousand dollars. I am not saying that it should be compared to a budget hotel like Motel 6, but this is not the Oriental Hotel (in Bangkok) either. (I never saw any staff after I checked in until I left.) Terrific location. Very close to Windsor, close to Eton College. A couple of blocks away from the train station. Recommended - wish it were less expensive.
