Description

The Lodge at Chaa Creek Adventure Centre and Spa is a private, 340-acre nature reserve set along the banks of the Macal River, in the foothills of the Maya Mountains, and approximately 78 miles from Philip Goldson International Airport. The Flemings purchased this land for farming in 1977 and eventually built a guest lodge from materials on the land to accommodate all the visitors seeking the serenity they'd heard about simply from word of mouth. The property's amenities include the restaurant (with its own temperature-controlled wine cellar), bar, Blue Morpho Butterfly Breeding Centre, Chaa Creek Natural History Centre, Chaa Creek Inland Expeditions, and Spa at Chaa Creek, which is set above the Macal River Valley and has treatment professionals and modern equipment and facilities. Guests can interact with nature by exploring the river and miles of well-maintained trails, Mayan temple sites, and activities such as hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, mountain biking, and bird watching. All units feature Mexican tiled floors, mahogany beds, original artwork, and private bathrooms with hot showers.

A bit of a disappointment

The tour guides were great! The all-inclusive meals were just OK. The accommodations were clean and adequate, but not over-the-top.

4 Star Resort With 2 Star Service
By ,
The Lodge at Chaa Creek is a beautiful resort, very private and exclusive. Our villa was absolutely lovely; screened windows, thatched roof, inside/outside showers, porch with hammock…A perfect villa to relax and unwind. The resort was extremely spacious with tons to see and tons to do. We were referred here from a former employee of Chaa Creek at our last resort. Our booking was very last minute and a little bit of a hassle. Apparently, if you want to stay there you must fax forms for booking. As we were already in Belize, it was nearly impossible for us to email or fax something for booking. Finally, my husband talked with the manager in order to confirm our booking without the needed forms. Upon our arrival, everyone was friendly, almost overly friendly in some ways, like the staff were trained. It seemed really difficult to eat elsewhere off the resort since San Ignacio was a little out of the way. I did manage to schedule a last minute spa appointment and enjoyed it so much, I followed up with an entire spa day the very next day while my husband went biking and canoeing. When it came time to depart, we notified the staff we wanted to leave really early so we could visit a nearby Maya Site (about 2 hours away) before making our plane flight to San Pedro. When we went to check out, of course no staff were anywhere to be found. We had to wait one hour before we could check out thus skipping the Maya Site. I was extremely disappointed, but arriving San Pedro made it disappear. We were also charged twice for a gift shop purchase, but thankfully my husband scans the hotel charges before checkout. I wouldn’t recommend this resort just for the service aspect, I would really expect more from a 4 star resort and spa.

Awesome
By ,
This place is absolutely amazing. We saw parrots and toucans every time we left our room. If you could live each day of life to it's fullest, this would be the place to call home. Very close to Tikal, and the outback of Belize. We toured several areas, and Chaa Creek was by far the best. My wife and i spent 4 days there on our honeymoon, and that wasn't ample time to explore the area. The food was outstanding, and the bloody mary's were great. I will definitely go back.

Expect the unexpected

What an amazing resort. Great hosts and a ton of stuff to do from canoeing to horseback riding, mountain biking to plain hanging out or take a visit to the beautifull spa located on top of the hill overlooking the property.

Great Experience
By ,
My wife and I spent six nites at the Lodge In October 2002. We had nothing but good experiences from the time we were picked up at the airport until the time we were returned to the airport. On the way to the Lodge our driver offered us lots of information about Belize. About half way to the Lodge we stopped and had a chance to experience our first Beliken beer. When we arrived at the Lodge we were greeted and escorted to our room. Our room was a duplex type unit overlooking the the jungle. The room was very clean and very quiet with a great view. One nite while waiting for dinner we were on our porch enjoying a beer and six tucans landed in the tree not more then ten feet away from us. They sat in the tree for five minutes and let us enjoy thier beauty. Every day there was a small iguana that sat under the tree and watched us read and enjoy our cocktails. One of the best things about this place is there are no telephones and no TV's. Meals were good and always with at least two options for the main course at the evening meal. The wine choice was limited but pretty good considering where we were. We did several activities offered by the Lodge. The horseback ride was very enjoyable and very educational. We canoed down the river to San Ignacio. What a great trip - little paddeling required and someone picks you up at the end of the trip. Along the way we saw lots of birds and huge iguanas laying in the trees. We also did the morning bird walk and the creatures of the night walk (highly recommend this). We spent time at the butterfly house learning about the blue morpho butterfly. I would also recommend the spa - where else can you lay outside on a hilltop and look out over the jungle and get a massage. We did two offsite tours. One to Tikal - a full day trip well worth it. If you only see one Myan ruin this is the one to see. We also went to the cave at Che Chum Ha. This was really cool climbing into this cave seeing the pottery that was left by the Myans. The grounds at Chaa Creek are beautiful. For those interested in plants - all of the trees and plants were marked for easy identification. I would highly recommend this Lodge. When we return to this part of Central America we will definately stay at Chaa Creek.

Macal River Camp at Chaa Creek
By ,
My wife and I were part of a group that stayed at the Camp, just down river from The Lodge, for two weeks this summer. The accomodations in the casitas were very comfortable with hot showers and flush toilets (hardly camping) within easy walking distance. The food was varied, ample, and excellently prepared, giving us a great sense of local cuisine. But the crowning glory was the staff. The Camp staff could not possibly have been better. They were available at all hours and catered to every request graciously and efficiently. They really became part of our group. For the level of service that was provided the rates were very reasonable.

Our group also made extensive use of the conference center, restaurant, and programming available on site. The owners were gracious, welcoming hosts and were involved with us during our stay. The nature and Maya site guides were very well trained and provided educational experiences that we could not possibly have attained on our own. The Natural History Centre and Blue Morpho Butterfly Farm were real treats.

We had a wonderful time in Belize and at Chaa Creek and will definitely return some day.

Paradise

I stayed at Chaa Creek with my three kids and their grandparents. The resort was beautiful, and the grounds so perfect, that they did not look real. Very friendly staff, and a great spa on the premises. Make time for a massage!!
