Simply wonderful
By Michelle, 7/8/04
We just got back from our honeymoon in June 2004 and had a great time. Property was WONDERFUL. The people there were great. The service was poor at times, but who doesn't get that when their at home????? The employees there are people who have bad days too. I was very impressed and am very sad that this place is closing.

It's Just Alright
By Pine Lane, 5/24/04
All I could think of was American Idol judge Randy Jackson saying this....my sentiments about the Grand Beach Palace Resort. The place has potential but it just did not impress me. The grouds are pretty and the scenery is nice but the rooms are in need of updates and the buildings are beginning to have a tired look. Most of the staff was friendly but some were very business like with no personality. Food at Smugglers was noticeably better than the other restaurant. Be prepared for lots of bingo and kareoke and the standard issue entertainment and activity. My one bedroom suite on the hillside was a hike from the beach and like the other resorts, be prepared to climb lots of steps. The front desk was unresponsive to my request for a closer room despite very limited attendance during my stay and the engineer who was supposed to check the air conditioning never showed up. You can have a decent time at this place, it won't knock your socks off and parts of your stay may be annoying. But while there, I also checked our several other places (Wyndham Sugar Bay, Best Western Emerald BEach and Point Pleasant resorts) and they did not impress either. My suggestion would be to look at the Ritz Carlton or Westin in St. Johns and spend the extra $$. If you are budget conscious and not too picky, do the all inclusive here.

Rennaissance Grand Beach Resort
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/26/04
I have visited St. Thomas on a yearly basis for approximately ten years. My last stay at the Renaissance in August 2000 was disappointing. The grounds are beautiful and the rooms are adequate, but the staff was rude, the service was poor and the food was marginal. My stay was much less enjoyable than it had been in the past. There is an intense feeling of local unrest on the island of St. Thomas that was reflected in the attitude of the Renaissance staff.

Nice but Not Nice Enough
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/26/04
I stayed at this hotel in February of 2001 for a wedding. We got a very small, run down room for what we paid. The bathroom was a mess. Our first night we found a lizard in our room, and during our vacation found several large cockroaches. The food was adequate, the poolside lunch area being much better than the two restaurants. The beach was nice, but not nearly as nice as the other ones we found on the island. The dive shop was wonderful, with free rental of snorkel gear, and excellent diving programs. The service was pretty good as far as we could tell, but other guests at the wedding reported some problems. My advice is that if you are going to stay here, pay more for a nicer room, preferably on the upper levels so you don`t have to worry about beach lizards. This is a great resort for a wedding, and they have an excellent spa. The watersports equipment and staff were wonderful. Overall, I thought this was a nice hotel, but it could be a bit cleaner.

Renaissance Grand Beach Resort 2002
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/26/04
I just returned from the Renaissance Grand Beach Resort two weeks ago and I had a fabulous time! The Renaissance is tucked into a small cove so it separates you from the hustle and bustle of the south side of the island. This resort offers everything its larger counterparts would offer, but on a smaller scale. The majority of water sports are included there is a spa, and a couple of restaurants. The beach at the hotel was well kept but very bustling with minimal privacy. The main pool was fairly basic but the layout allowed for more peace and quiet as you could find a corner and mark it to yourself whereas the beach was more a free for all. I highly suggest paying the extra fee for a ?poolside? room and request that it has a patio or balcony there are poolside rooms that are mini-suites that do not have balconies or windows that you can open. Many of the rooms at this resort are a long walk from the beach and pool and would be inconvenient especially with small children. The restaurants were good for basic American fare. Breakfast was fabulous with a fresh buffet and open air dining which was conveniently included in our package. I highly suggest planning on dining out for dinner to open your eyes up to the rest of the island and expand your pallet a bit (not to mention that escaping the tortures of karaoke night are a must)! The staff was very pleasant, laid back but pleasant none the less. The rooms were basic and very clean. I would recommend this resort but I would also note that one could go stir-crazy here for a lengthy stay and non-resort outings would only add to the experience! A truly enjoyable weekend getaway!
