Description

Probably the oldest hotel in Guanajuato, and certainly the best known, the Posada Santa Fe is the place to stay in town. Not only does it house a venerable collection of the works of the local artist and historian Manuel Leal but it also has the most desirable tables for soaking up the local atmosphere, right on the lively Jardin de la Union. Enter the magnificent lobby and one could be in one of the finest hotels in Mexico. Lofty beamed ceilings, delicate chandeliers, and antique chairs all fade into insignificance alongside the giant paintings dominating the walls. The off-lobby restaurant has the same setting, as does the lounge, with antique chairs and couches perfect for pre-dinner cocktails. The guest rooms are approached up a winding staircase, with a colorful tile surround. The rooms themselves vary from the high ceiling suites at the front of the hotel to simpler decor at the back. All have a certain charm, a slightly faded grandeur, yet updated with modern facilities. The hotel has been owned and managed by the same family for several generations, and although there are exciting plans for future improvements, the emphasis is on retaining the historic and the traditional. Meals served in the restaurants are as good as the setting, and the location is the best in town. Guanajuato itself is not short of attractions and the only problem could be trying to drag oneself away.

not worth the price
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/5/11
The room was tiny, and they offer a full not queen bed. No Air conditioning!! They charged me 250 pesos extra when they saw I was with another person. They asked me late at night when I was going up with another person if the lady would be staying the night with me. I thought it was very inappropriate to have asked that in front of her as we are going up the stairs. This is a hotel not a house!! They had to charge me there on the spot and didn't give me a receipt. I have no problem paying the money, but I thought it wasn't fair since I wasn't receiving anything in return. It wasn't if I was getting a bigger room or a bigger bed. They just charged me for having another person breathing their air. I would reccomend going to Hotel San Diego across the street where my brother stayed, they charge 850 pesos a night, king size bed and a balcony out to the plaza.

Great hotel with helpful staff
By abe, 6/26/07
A nice hotel with helpful staff. If you are interested in an amazing hiking experience, go to the front desk at the hotel posada de santa fe, and look for the brochure. Our guide was excellent (helpful man named vladimir) and the hike was excellent. Highly recommended!

Not what is advertised
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/4/07
While this hotel is particularly well located, the rooms are not what is advertised. They are rather small, and the bathrooms are sub par. The small stall shower in our bathroom was set up in such a way that you could not stand under the shower head, but had to stand to one side, and try to rinse off as best you could. One of our friends rented a suite, which was well decorated and spacious--including the bathroom--but the drain in the floor of the bathroom emitted such a strong sewer gas odor that it made the room almost unusable! They poured water into the drain, which helped but did not solve the problem. Our other friends' bathroom had tile with lots of mold on the grout. This hotel was our most expensive during our visit to colonial Mexico, so one would have expected superior rooms. The lobby is beautiful, but they need to overhaul the rooms and especially the bathrooms. We noticed that a number of bathrooms were being renovated, so I suspect things will improve in the future. However, the real negative was the staff. While we had one young woman at the desk who was efficient and helpful, the rest of the staff seemed haughty and they were less than helpful. The food in the hotel was OK, but service was rather slow. Guanajuato is such a beautiful place, that I am sure one can find better accommodations for the same price or less. At least you should be able to find a place with cleaner, nicer bathrooms.
