5 Calgary Downtown Suites, Calgary

This was our first time at 5 Calgary, and we must say that the hotel actually exceeded all our expectations. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and welcoming (including housekeeping). They all displayed great customer service, and were well informed, knowledgeable and efficient. We stayed three nights in a one-bedroom suite, which was absolutely clean, roomy, cozy and comfortable. There was plenty of open space in the kitchen and living room to maneuver around. The bedroom also had plenty of open space for luggage, and the bed was absolutely comfortable. Despite all other reviews on this hotel, we had no problem with the air conditioning. We found the location of the hotel to be prime; it was within walking distances to restaurants, coffee shops, shopping centres, etc. for those who want to stay downtown. However, a few things to be cautioned about. The washroom may be a little tight if two people are trying to access it at the same time. The fitness room is not as big as it looks (in the picture) with few equipments. We stayed away from the (outdoor) pool since it was littered with flies and various insects. However, the sauna room is worth a visit if you want to relax at night before bed. Since we booked in advance and only paid $103/night including taxes for this hotel, it was definitely well worth our stay. This hotel is now at the top of our list the next time we visit Calgary.

We walked into our room, looked around the hotel, walked by the pool, grabbed our bags and walked out. The cost was $200 for the night and the place was worn and old - the headboard on the bed actually worried me. Save your money and a hassle - go somewhere else.

I have stayed at this hotel for many years, way back when it was the Hawthorne, but this is the first time I have been shocked by a 21 day cancellation policy. From the day I booked to the day I stay, there isn't even 21 days and the cost is one night stay. That is ridiculous, a 21 day cancellation policy during an oil show...we don't all work for oil companies...some of us are tourists. Otherwise, the hotel is clean, but very basic decor and comfort. The only real plus is that the units use to be apartments, so you have a kitchen and living space.

The people working at front desk were incredibly rude and the shower in my room was not in working condition. The hotel management tried to blame a reservation booking error on their part on me and charge me incorrectly. I have never in all of my years of traveling encountered such a horrible place - the hotel completely ruined what would have otherwise been a great trip - avoid this place like the plague!!

The location was excellent, righ down town. We spent two nights at the hotel while I underwent eye lasic surgery. The staff in all areas were very friendly and helpfull. The roomms were nice and clean, everything worked great. Phone rates were at $5 cents to anywhere in Canada and the US. We loved out stay and will return again. Roger and Diana.

We stayed for two months with our 2 years old son in this hotel.It was an absolutely wonderful experience for us. What we liked most about it, we felt at home during our stay.You can cook in your kitchen and eat in your dining room like you are in your house. Staff were so helpful and child friendly. Breakfast buffet and brunch were very rich. We wouldn't hesitate for a moment to stay if need to.

This hotel is very dirty. I was told it was a 3.5 star hotel and it is in no way a 3.5 star hotel. The decor is from the 40's - the drawer liners are original, the appliances are from the 40's. In addition to the poor decor the hotel itself is extremely dirty. I saw garbage on the floors in common areas, breakfast crumbs in 3 of the rooms I checked. The bottom of the bathtub was brown with dirt, the tiles had mildew on them. The paint was peeling in all 3 rooms. This hotel is a 1 star hotel. Stay at the Sheraton - same price - Way better service and much nicer rooms. Do not pre-book this hotel on orbitz - etc. until you've seen it.
