Stay Away!

Due to a change in travel plans we spent the night in Casper, Wyoming last Friday night (September 26th, 2008). Because this was a last minute change in our plans we didn’t have time to spend looking around for a motel, but we thought we should be safe staying at a Best Western. As it turns out, we were sorely mistaken.
Our room at the Best Western Ramkota was absolutely disgusting. The filthy carpets and awful smell in the hallways should have been an indication of what our room would be like. I could easily have overlooked the filth in the hallway if our room had been decent, but it wasn’t.
When I walked into the room I was met by a musty smell coming from the bathroom. After turning on the light in the bathroom and waiting for it to reach full flicker, I could see the source of the smell. There was mold in the grout of the shower and around the baseboards. The floor looked like it had only been quickly wiped down because there was a thick accumulation of dust and grime in the corners. The exhaust fan in the ceiling was almost plugged with dust. There was hair and other dirt on the ceiling that made it look like it had been wiped with a dirty rag. The towels hanging on the bent towel rack were worn and stained. The sink didn’t drain properly and the shower/tub hardly drained at all. After a quick shower the water was more than ankle deep. The doorknob on the bathroom door was loose. The flourescent light in the bathroom flickered horribly.
The rest of the room wasn’t any better. The curtains had been torn loose on both ends and wouldn’t cover the window properly. They also had what appeared to be cigarette burns in them. It was obvious from the dust bunnies and other garbage on the floor that the carpet hadn’t been vacuumed around the edges or under any furniture. The wallpaper near the bathroom door had been torn off the wall and slapped back on. The safety latch on the door to the hallway was broken off and the door was damaged where the latch should have been. The ottoman was broken. Although I didn’t dare look too closely at the sheets for fear of what I might find, they had obviously seen better days.
Before booking our room I did have time to read a few reviews on the internet. There were some negative reviews, but because I also saw that the hotel had recently been remodeled, I thought that maybe things had changed. Wrong!!! From the condition of our room I’m guessing it may have been given new carpet and wallpaper, but the previous filth hadn’t been removed and the grime that had accumulated since the “remodel” hadn’t been taken care of either. It was obvious that the room hadn't had more than a superficial cleaning for a very long time.
The only “courtesy” offered by the hotel was a complimentary newspaper in the morning. However, it didn’t seem very courteous to be woken up early in the morning by the loud thump of the newspapers being thrown at each of the doors along the hallway.
Rooms like this are the reason for avoiding low-budget motels. However, even when I have had to stay at a budget motel, I've never seen anything like this.
This was the last night of a ten day road trip through the Midwest and this was by far the most expensive and most disgusting place we stayed. In fact, this is the dirtiest place I have ever stayed in my life. For what we paid I think we were entitled to accommodations that were at least clean, if nothing else. I will avoid this place at all costs and encourage everyone I know to do the same.
