Great Price Great Value
By LIN, 2/23/12
This hotel gets a lot of bad reviews, but most seem to be just nit picking. My stay here was exceptional. When we are spoiled by high tech electronics and wireless internet this hotel reserves the values of good service and the necessity of NEEDED amenities are here. They have a wonderful continental breakfast and service was top notch. My stay was through the week, and I will most defiantly return. To me the hotel was GREAT and the other reviews are just complainers.

2011 - Feb review. The good and the bad
By VQ, 2/22/11
My kids and I stayed there last week during a trip to Granite Peak ski resort. I read the reviews prior to reserving and knew what to expect (older, etc.). I'm okay with a dated look as long as the staff is customer focused and it is clean.I checked ahead of time to make sure they had a pool and internet connection as well as the distance to the ski resort. Everything seemed to fit the bill. Good - I was happy with the pool area. The kids enjoyed it, it was roomy, and appeared clean. Our room was a good size and for the most part (see below) was clean and pleasant. Not so good - No towels at the pool. Front desk said that housekeeping couldn't keep up with the demand. Offered no other help except to say "you can bring them from your room" The internet connection would not work. I checked with the desk and they gave me a phone number for their technical support group. When I called the number, I got a recording that I was calling outside of hours (it was 6pm) and I should leave a message and they would get back to me on the next business day. I called back to the front desk and was told there was nothing else they could do about it. My friends who were staying in the next room had the same problem. This was a huge problem for me as I had work that needed to be completed that night. When it was bed time, my kids pulled out the sleeper sofa and found dirty sheets and a blood-stained tissue in the bed. I closed the sofa and told the kids to sleep in the bed with me. At this point having clean sheets delivered wouldn't be enough to get me to put my kids on the sleeper, and it was too late to move rooms, so I let it go. I called the hotel two days later to see if they would make it right before I left a review and all I got was "I'm sorry, I wish you had called me that night". As I mentioned, there wasn't anything they could have done that night to fix it, so what's the point. Any one of these issues would have been fine if the staff had shown a bit more concern and tried a little hard to help. By the time the sleeper sofa was opened, I was already tired of dealing with the front desk, which is why I called back later.

Avoid this hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/10/11
I just stayed at the Plaza in conjunction with a trip to Granite Peak Ski resort. I was severely disappointed. In response to the Aug 2nd google review "Worst hotel I've ever stayed in", Manager Robert Scholnick admits that "Our hotel is older, but we work very hard to have clean comfortable rooms for all of our guests." That was hardly my case. Room 148 was dark and dingy. The tiny bathroom (I needed to step into the tub to close the door) had a hole in the wall and so many grimy handprints on its interior that its white surface was gray. (not to mention the veneer was so torn up it looked like someone nailed scrap wood together). Outlets didn't function. The pool chemicals permeated the air. Carpets are stained and tattered. Blue paint chips floated in the pools. (God forbid they were lead based) I will say the morning food service attendants as well as the front desk woman were lovely and helpful. This hotel is old but that does not excuse lapses in general repair and cleaning.

Very nice
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/7/10
We liked our room, the pool area, and the hotel was clean. What we didn't like was not having a hot breakfast like most hotels we've stayed at. All they had was cereal and some fruit.

Unless you have loud obnoxious kids avoid this hotel
By Milwcpl, 2/18/07
We recently stayed at this hotel for two nights; we had a 'poolside' room and planned on having a nice weekend. The hotel was in terrible shape, the room was dated and the advertised two pools and two 20 person hot tubs is a flat lie. Currently there is one pool and one large hot tub. There is a second hot tube in the exercise area but it only holds about ten people comfortably. Also the poolside room was incredibly noisy each morning we awoke at 7:30 to screaming kids getting ready to swim when the pool opened at 8:00. Also the pool and large hot tub were so crowded with kids we never even attempted to use these facilities. So, in short, we had a stinky (chlorine), humid room which was VERY noisy from 7:30 in the morning to 10:30 at night. Also I tried to complain about the noise and asked for our second night to be refunded so we could leave but was basically laughed at and told to deal with it.

great hotel if you have young kids
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/3/06
The kiddie pool was great!!! The entire swim area was very nice. The murals on the wall were very cool. The room was okay. Nothing fancy. I would spend another night there.

Will never return there
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/17/06
This place is way overrated. We felt the front desk did not know what they were doing. The rooms were not clean. We only had one bed in our room and we had reserved 2 beds for us. Then to find out we only had 1 mattress on our bed. They did not do anything about the problem. It was a nightmare.

I will never return here
By Doris Elisabeth, 3/14/06
Do not be fooled by the name of this hotel - you are not staying at the Plaza in New York City; this is Wausau, Wisconsin. The front desk often seemed as if they didn't know quite how to handle our questions, i.e. would our room be ready ahead of time for a slightly early check in? One day we came back from lunch to find that housekeeping had stopped by and we now had no bath towels. We inquired and were told "they are working on it." They never arrived. We called again, and they arrived a couple hours later. Not good if one wanted to utilize the pool or take a hot shower after skiing. The pool area also ran out of towels. We were awoken both nights by drunken (probably underage) young men stumbling and shouting through the halls and slamming doors. The hotel restaurant was overwhelmed by the Saturday night dinner crowd that only filled half of their tables. I was ignored by the busy host for 10 minutes, and then told that we could sit down, but we would have to wait 20 minutes until anyone waited on us. I would never return here.
