Oglebay Resort & Conference Center, Wheeling

We reserved a king room in the new section four months in advance. When we arrived, we were placed in a handicapped room; we had not asked for such. No amount of attempting to contact management received a response. We will not return.

Beware. Their sales people and service people are not on the same page. Had wedding rehearsal dinner and reception there. Service and food quality was bad at the rehearsal dinner. Not recommended. I regret our decision to take it there. Beware.

New cabin's are very nice, so stay away from the old ones. Golf courses are ok. If like hitting a shot straight down the middle or to the top of the ridge and still be at the bottom behind trees then this is your course. Highly overrated. Service was so bad on our first trip they invited us back for another weekend on them so that was good business that you don't see much more. Food is good, and there is some ok bars around town.

We returned recently from a week long family vacation with 8 adults (including grandparents) and 8 kids from age 2 to 15 (in 2 4 bedroom cottages). We all loved it! So much to do on the grounds - indoor and outdoor pools, golf, mini golf, zoo, tennis, museums, paddle boats, nature center and hiking trails. It was easy for us all to go off in different large or small groups to do what we liked and then meet up later. We did not venture off site much, tho we really enjoyed the 2 things we did do (the West Va museum in Wheeling and the Palace of Gold), not much else in Wheeling. Cottages were clean, living rooms very large, and not very rustic (a plus). There were many families having big parties but none were rowdy. Activities were generally not crowded, except the indoor pool on a rainy day. I have already highly recommended the place to others seeking to have large family gatherings. Minor negatives - no housekeeping (you can get fresh towels and sheets but its a long walk), no grill (we brought a hibachi), and a few things were not included in the 5-day wristbands we purchased for $25 (like the planetarium shows). But overall, highly recommended for family groups (not a romantic couples place, at least not in the summer). We booked the cottages 12 months prior and they were the last 2 available so book early!

We were there for two nights March 16 & 17, 2007. My Husband and I took my mother and nephew for a stay at Wilson Lodge. The place is BEAUTIFUL. The Stone floors and the crown molding with all of the rich wood and fireplaces made the place feel homey. The halls were immaculate. THey have lots of real flowers and plants all through the lodge. I could not find a dead leaf on one of them. THey were beautiful! I can only imagine how beutiful the gardens are outside in the spring and summer months. The food was great and there was plenty to do to keep my nephew busy. He swam, we played ping pong, looked in the gift shop- he watched the flat screen TV - we walked around the Zoo and even watched the laser show. Plenty to do. As I said, it was a beautiful place. We saw lots of deer on the grounds - CAN'T WAIT TO RETURN!!! We will definitely be back before to long, without my nephew. We will use this as home base and visit the casino and dog track. REALLY GIVE OGELBAY A TRY - YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED - I PROMISE!!!!!

Liked everything about it. The rooms have been redone and very modern and clean. The service was great and so was the food. Everyone is friendly and it is a nice place to visit with plenty of things to do.

We loved the newly renovated rooms! Our room had a big screen HDTV, an automatic gas fireplace that operated with a push of a button, new king bed and even a brand new super-comfortable pull out sofa. I was impressed that after we made our reservation online, they called us back and had noticed we had children in our party and suggested a room in the main lodge, so the kids didn't have to go outside in the cold to get to the pool and activities. They have changed their policy and now do not requre a 2 night stay on the weekends, which we took advantage of. There was so much to do and see, we have to go back.

We went here last year for a holiday family getaway. It was a great time. There was twelve us in all ages and the kids ages 6-17 all loved the pool area. They swam and played pingpong and games all weekend. The adult hung out and swam some and played ping pong too and went hiking. The food was great! We had the dinner and breakfast buffet and it was pricey but worth it. The lights were nice to see too but we preferred to go in our own car instead of the trolley. The hotel is rustic and cozy feeling. The rooms were small with a cabin feel to them. All the lights and hotel decorations were beautiful and we enjoyed the nightly cookies, cider and cocoa as a nice holiday touch. Well worht going for a family get away of a romantic couples weekend.

We have been visiting Oglebay since 1999. We stayed in the lodge in the begining and the past years have enjoyed a cottage. It is definitley perfect whether you are going with a big family or just want to relax as a couple and enjoy the wildlife, walking trails and excellent food and entertainment at the lodge. I would recommend Oglebay 100% to anyone who desires a fun filled vacation in one of the most beautiful spots in America. My husband and I look forward to each vacation and hope to be able to go many more years. We are now seniors and enjoy our stays even more. Thank you Oglebay, hope to return again this fall.
